Virtue of Fragrance and Clean Attire on the Day of Jumu‘ah

❖ Encouragement to Wear Fragrance and Clean Clothes on Jumu‘ah

❖ Applying Fragrance and Dressing Neatly on Jumu‘ah is Recommended (Mustahabb)​


➊ Narration of Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī (رضي الله عنه)​


The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:


الغسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل محتلم وأن يستن وأن يمس طيبا إن وجد
“Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah is obligatory upon every adult, and he should use the miswāk and apply fragrance if available.”
[Bukhari: 880, 2665; Kitāb al-Jumuʿah: Bāb al-Ṭīb lil-Jumuʿah | Muslim: 846]


The narrator, ʿAmr ibn Sulaym (رحمه الله), commenting on this hadith says:


➤ “I bear witness that ghusl is obligatory, but regarding the use of miswāk and fragrance, Allah knows best whether they are obligatory or not.”

➋ Narration of Salman al-Fārisī (رضي الله عنه)​


The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:


“Whoever performs ghusl on Jumu‘ah, purifies himself as much as he can, applies oil or uses perfume from his home, then sets out (for the mosque) without separating two people, prays what is written for him, and remains silent when the Imam begins the khutbah — then his sins between that Jumu‘ah and the next will be forgiven.”

The Prophet ﷺ said:


“Whoever takes a ghusl on Friday, applies perfume if he has it, wears his best clothes, walks calmly to the mosque, prays if possible, causes no harm to anyone, and remains silent when the Imam comes out until he finishes the prayer — this will be an expiation for his sins committed between that Friday and the next.”
