Verification of the Hadith "مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ شَیْئًا وُکِّلَ إِلَیْہِ"

Question:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ شَیْئًا وُکِّلَ إِلَیْہِ" (Musnad Ahmad 310/4, Mustadrak Hakim 215/4). What is the verification of this Hadith? (Abdullah Tahir, Islamabad)

Answer:

The narration "مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ شَیْئًا وُکِّلَ إِلَیْہِ" (Whoever hangs something (e.g., an amulet), he is entrusted to it) has been narrated by Hakim (216/4, Hadith 7503), Ibn Abi Shaybah (371/7, Hadith 23447), and Bayhaqi (351/9) among others, through the chain of

"محمد بن عبدالرحمٰن ابن أبي لیلیٰ عن أخیہ عیسیٰ بن عبدالرحمٰن بن أبي لیلیٰ عن عبداللہ بن عکیم".

Tabarani narrated this same Hadith through the chain

"محمد ابن أبي لیلیٰ عن عیسیٰ عن أبي معبد الجھني".

  • (Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir 385/22, Hadith 960)
Abu Ma'bad al-Juhani, Abdullah bin Uqaim, and Muhammad bin Abi Laila are considered weak narrators.

Supporting Narrations (Shawahid):

  1. "عباد بن میسرۃ المنقري عن الحسن عن أبي ھریرۃ رضي اللہ عنہ"
    • (Sunan al-Nasa'i al-Mujtaba 112/7, Hadith 4084; Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i: 3542; Al-Kamil by Ibn Adi 1648/4)
    • This narration is weak for two reasons:
    • First: Hasan al-Basri did not explicitly state hearing this from Abu Hurayrah Hasan al-Basri was known for Tadlis (concealing defects in a chain of narration). See Taqrib al-Tahdhib (1227) and Tabaqat al-Mudallisin (2/40).
    • Second: 'Abad bin Maisarah is considered weak (Da'if). (See Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 3149)
  2. "مبارک بن فضالۃ عن الحسن بن عمران بن حصین رضي اللہ عنہ"
    • (Sahih Ibn Hibban, Al-Ihsan: 6053, another version: 6085)
    • Hasan al-Basri did not explicitly state hearing this from Imran bin Husayn Although there is an explicit mention in one narration (Musnad Ahmad 445/4), in that chain, Mubarak bin Fadalah is known for Tadlis and there is no clear mention of hearing this Hadith. Hence, this chain is weak.
  3. "مشرح بن ھاعان عن عقبۃ بن عامر رضي اللہ عنہ عن رسول اللہ ﷺ قال : ((من تعلق تمیمۃ فلا اتم اللہ لہ، ومن تعلق ودعۃ فلا ودع اللہ لہ))"
    • Whoever hangs a Tamimah (amulet), may Allah not fulfill his purpose, and whoever hangs a Wada'ah (a type of charm), may Allah not give him peace. (Musnad Ahmad 154/4, Hadith 17404; its chain is Hasan, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Al-Ihsan: 6054, another version: 6086; Al-Mustadrak 216/4; authenticated by Al-Dhahabi)
    • This narration has a Hasan chain. Khalid bin Ubaid was declared a reliable narrator by Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi.

Statement of a Tabi'i:

Abu Majliz Lahik bin Humayd (a Tabi'i) said: "من تعلق علاقۃ وکل إلیھا" - Whoever hangs anything will be entrusted to it. (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 374/7, Hadith 23456; its chain is authentic)

Conclusion:

Although the narration "مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ شَیْئًا وُکِّلَ إِلَیْہِ" is not entirely authentic in its chain, it has a supporting Hasan narration. Therefore, one should avoid hanging amulets or threads and place complete trust in Allah alone.
