Question:

Is it permissible to perform an obligatory prayer behind someone who is praying a nafl?

Answer:

Yes, the prayer of one performing an obligatory prayer behind a person praying nafl, and vice versa, is valid.

Evidence ① – Imamate of a Child (Nafl behind Fard):
Sayyiduna ʿAmr bin Salamah رضي الله عنه said:

قدموني بين أيديهم، وأنا ابن ست أو سبع سنين.

"My people appointed me to lead them in prayer when I was six or seven years old."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4302)

This ḥadīth proves that the prayer of one praying fard behind a nafl is valid, because a child is not obliged to pray, yet the Companions prayed behind him in the time of the Prophet ﷺ.

Evidence ② – Muʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه (Fard behind Fard/Nafl):
Sayyiduna Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh رضي الله عنه said:

كان معاذ رضى الله عنه يصلي مع النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم يأتى فيؤم قومه...

"Muʿādh رضي الله عنه used to pray with the Prophet ﷺ, then come and lead his people. One night he prayed ʿIshāʾ with the Prophet ﷺ, then came and led his people in the same prayer, starting with Sūrah al-Baqarah..."

When a man complained due to the length of the recitation, the Prophet ﷺ said to Muʿādh رضي الله عنه:

يا معاذ، أفتان أنت؟ اقرأ بكذا واقرأ بكذا.

"O Muʿādh, are you a cause of trial? Recite such and such sūrahs (shorter ones)."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 700, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 465)

This narration also shows that Muʿādh رضي الله عنه prayed his fard with the Prophet ﷺ, then repeated the same prayer with his people as nafl, while they prayed their fard behind him — and the Prophet ﷺ did not object to the validity of their prayer.
