Validity of Prayer Behind an Imām Who Makes Mistakes in Qurʾānic Recitation

Sharʿī Ruling on the Validity of Prayer Behind an Imām Who Makes Mistakes in Recitation

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Bāb al-Ṣalāh, Vol. 1, p. 160

Question:

In our local Jāmiʿ Masjid, the Imām makes mistakes in Qurʾānic recitation—for example, he sometimes reads a fatḥah (zabar) as alif-fatḥah (khadā zabar) or vice versa. I have advised him several times to correct his recitation, but he does not pay attention.

I also mentioned this issue to other members of the congregation, but they respond by saying: “It’s fine, somehow the prayer is going on.”

We are compelled to pray behind him because if we avoid the congregation, we lose the reward of praying in jamāʿah. However, I am troubled by doubts—perhaps our prayer is invalid. Please clarify the correct Sharʿī ruling.

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

It is valid to pray behind such an Imām, because no Muslim intentionally changes a fatḥah into alif-fatḥah or vice versa. These mistakes occur due to weakness in recitation or deficiency in pronunciation, not out of deliberate intent to alter the Qurʾān.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«اَلْمَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ، وَالَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَتَعْتَعُ فِيهِ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ»
(Mishkāt, Vol. 1, p. 652 – Agreed upon)

Meaning:
“The one who is proficient in the Qurʾān will be with the noble, righteous scribes (angels). And the one who reads the Qurʾān with difficulty, stammering through it and struggling, for him there are two rewards.”

Thus, if an Imām is not skilled in Qurʾānic recitation, but his intention is sincere and he strives to recite correctly, then performing ṣalāh behind him is valid.

However, if he refuses to learn at all and continues to display negligence in recitation, then the mosque administration should take this issue seriously and guide him towards correction.

Until such reform is made, as long as his mistakes do not amount to invalidating the prayer (such as altering meanings to the point of corruption), the prayers behind him are valid. The doubt you feel is baseless, provided that the Imām is not deliberately distorting the Qurʾān.

Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam bi-ṣ-ṣawāb.
