Validity of Prayer Behind a Minor Ḥāfiẓ Leading as Imam in Islam

Validity of Prayer Behind a Minor Imam in Light of Authentic Aḥādīth

❓ Question:

If a minor child is a ḥāfiẓ of Qurʾān and among the attendees no adult knows more Qurʾān than him, can he lead the prayer?

✅ Answer:

According to Ahl al-Ḥadīth and the majority of muḥaddithīn, if such a child is ṣaḥīḥ al-ʿaqīdah (upon sound belief), he may lead both obligatory prayers and Tarāwīḥ.

✦ Evidence 1: Ḥadīth of ʿAmr ibn Salimah رضي الله عنه

Narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (4302):

The Prophet ﷺ instructed:
«فليؤمكم أكثركم قرآنا»
“…Let the one among you who knows the most Qurʾān lead the prayer.”

ʿAmr ibn Salimah رضي الله عنه, though only six or seven years old, was appointed imam of his people because he had memorized the most Qurʾān.

This narration was recorded by Imām al-Bukhārī under the heading: “Bāb Imāmat al-Ṣabī al-Qārī” (The Leadership of Prayer by a Child who Knows Qurʾān).

✦ Evidence 2: Ḥadīth of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī رضي الله عنه

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«إذا كانوا ثلاثة فليؤمهم أحدهم، وأحقهم بالإمامة أقرؤهم»
“When three people are together (for prayer), one should lead them, and the one most entitled to lead is the one who knows the most Qurʾān.”
📚 Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (672)

This clearly shows that Qurʾān recitation, not age or maturity, is the primary criterion for imāmah.

✦ Opinions of Classical Scholars:

  • Imām al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله:
“If a minor who knows prayer leads adults, it is valid, though an adult’s leadership is better.”
    📚 al-Umm, 1/166
  • Imām Ibn Khuzaymah رحمه الله:
“Permissibility of a non-bāligh leading adults if he knows more Qurʾān.”
    📚 Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah, 3/6
  • Imām al-Bayhaqī رحمه الله:
Dedicated a chapter: “Imāmah of a child who has not reached puberty.”
    📚 al-Sunan al-Kubrā, 3/91
  • Imām Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh رحمه الله:
“If a child is 9 or 10 years old, his imāmah is valid.”
    📚 Masāʾil al-Imām Aḥmad wa Isḥāq, 1/151
  • Imām Ibn al-Mundhir رحمه الله:
“The imāmah of a minor is valid if he knows prayer and can stand properly.”
    📚 al-Awsaṭ, 4/152

✦ Refutation of Objections:

Some narrations cited by opponents are either:

  • Unsubstantiated (lā isnād)
  • Fabricated (mawḍūʿ)
  • Reported via weak or abandoned narrators
  • Or from mudallis narrators without clear proof of hearing.

Hence, they do not hold against the authentic narrations of Bukhārī and Muslim.

📌 Summary of Research:

✅ If a minor ḥāfiẓ with sound belief knows more Qurʾān and understands prayer, his leadership in ṣalāh is valid and permissible.
❌ There is no authentic evidence proving that his imāmah is prohibited, disliked, or abrogated.
