Using Miswak During Ramadan: Clarifying Misconceptions

❖ Question:

Some people avoid using the miswak during the days of Ramadan out of fear that it might invalidate their fast. Is this correct? Also, what is the most virtuous time to use the miswak during Ramadan?

❖ Answer:

There is no valid reason to avoid using the miswak, whether during Ramadan or any other day on which one is fasting. Using the miswak is a Sunnah, as established in authentic Hadith:

"Miswak cleanses the mouth and earns the pleasure of Allah."

Its use has been highly recommended at several occasions, such as:
  • During ablution (wudu)
  • Before prayer (salah)
  • Upon waking up
  • When entering the house
This applies to both fasting and non-fasting individuals alike.

Importantly, using the miswak does not break the fast. However, certain precautions should be observed:✔ If the taste or particles of the miswak mix with saliva, they should not be swallowed.
✔ If bleeding occurs from the gums, the blood should also not be swallowed.

By adhering to these guidelines, one may use the miswak without any negative effect on the fast.
