Using Fingers for Counting Adhkār After Salah

❀ Fingers Should Be Used for Counting Adhkār After Salah ❀

The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ teaches us to count the praises of Allah (like Tasbīḥ, Taḥmīd, and Takbīr) using the fingers, particularly the right hand.

① Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:

اعْقِدْنَ بِالْأَنَامِلِ، فَإِنَّهُنَّ مَسْئُولَاتٌ مُسْتَنْطَقَاتٌ
"Count (the praises) using your fingers, for they will be questioned and made to speak (on the Day of Judgment)."

📚 [Ḥasan: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 1329; Tirmidhī: 3583; Kitāb al-Daʿawāt: Bāb fī Faḍl al-Tasbīḥ wa al-Tahlīl wa al-Taqdīs; Abū Dāwūd: 1501; Ibn Abī Shaybah: 10/289; Ṭabarānī al-Kabīr: 181; Ḥākim: 1/547; Aḥmad: 6/380; Ibn Ḥibbān: 842]

This hadith highlights that fingers will testify on the Day of Judgment, thus encouraging their use in remembering Allah.

② Another Hadith Regarding the Use of the Right Hand:

يَعْقِدُ التَّسْبِيحَ بِيَمِينِهِ
"The Prophet ﷺ used to count the Tasbīḥ with his right hand."

📚 [Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 1330; Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Bāb al-Tasbīḥ bi al-Ḥaṣā; Abū Dāwūd: 1502; Tirmidhī: 3411; Nasā’ī: 3/79; Ḥākim: 1/547]

This indicates the preferred use of the right hand specifically for counting dhikr.

③ Opinion of Shaykh Ibn Bāz رحمه الله

Shaykh Ibn Bāz stated:

"Abandoning the use of a rosary (tasbīḥ beads) is better, and some scholars have even disliked its use. The most virtuous method is to perform Tasbīḥ with the fingers, as this was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ."

📚 [Al-Fatāwā: 1/76]

✅ Summary of Rulings:

Using fingers (especially of the right hand) for counting dhikr after Salah is Sunnah.
❖ Fingers will testify in our favor on the Day of Judgment.
❖ The Prophet ﷺ did not use tasbīḥ beads, and some scholars discouraged their use.
Following the Prophetic method carries greater reward and ensures one’s actions remain aligned with the Sunnah.
