Unveiling in Front of Non-Mahram Men

Fatwa by: Sheikh Ibn Jibreen (Hafizahullah)

Question:

A friend of mine says that her husband has allowed her to be without hijab in front of his close relatives. In return, her friend’s husband has allowed his wife to sit without hijab in front of her husband. Is this permissible?

Answer:

It is not permissible for you to obey your husband in the matter of sitting unveiled in front of his male relatives, even if they are his own brothers. These individuals are considered non-Mahram (strangers) to you. Being unveiled in front of them is a potential cause of fitnah (temptation). Likewise, it is not permissible for your friend’s husband to allow his wife to be unveiled in front of your husband. Obedience to your husband in such matters is not allowed according to Islamic principles.
