Un Islamic Practice of 'Milk Money' from Groom: A Shar’i Ruling

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 721

❖ Question:

In some wedding customs, the groom is made to drink milk, and girls then demand money from him as part of a tradition.
Is this practice permissible in Sharīʿah?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

This custom is not permissible in Sharīʿah, as it involves multiple un-Islamic and impermissible practices, which are often present without exception:

✦ Sharʿī Violations in This Custom:

➊ Young women, adorned and beautified, come before the non-maḥram groom.
➋ They appear without proper ḥijāb.
➌ They engage in joking, teasing, and playful interaction with the groom.
➍ In some cases, it even leads to physical contact.

Therefore, this un-Islamic and Hindu-origin custom must be abandoned immediately.

If not abandoned, then all those involved—the girls, the groom, and both hosts and guests—will fall under the ruling of "Dayyūth" (a person lacking protective jealousy) and be guilty of sin.

Additionally, conversation between the groom and the sisters-in-law or other women often leads to dangerous and harmful consequences, both morally and socially.
