Types of Permissible Sports in Islam

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمہ اللہ)

In Islam, sports and activities aimed at training and preparing for jihad, such as camel racing, horse racing, archery, and other forms of combat-related competitions, are considered permissible. These activities fall under the category of preparation for defensive purposes.

Qur'anic Evidence:

Allah Almighty says:

"And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows. And whatever you spend in the cause of Allah will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged."

[Surah Al-Anfal: 60]

Prophetic Guidance:

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated:

"Competition with compensation is only allowed in camel racing, horse racing, and archery."

This hadith emphasizes that engaging in competitions involving these specific activities with monetary or material rewards is permissible, as they contribute to the physical and strategic preparation necessary for Islamic defense.
