The Story of the Prophet (PBUH) and a Wedding (Ceremony)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (RA) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying: “I never intended to do what the people of ignorance intended to do, except on two occasions, and each time Allah saved me from it. One day, I said to my young Qurayshi companion, who used to graze sheep with me in the upper part of Makkah: ‘Take care of my sheep while I spend the night in Makkah as the youth stay awake.’ My companion agreed. Then I left, and when I reached one of the houses in Makkah, I heard the sound of music. I asked, ‘What is this?’

They replied that a certain Qurayshi man was getting married to a certain woman. I was inclined towards the music and the sound, but then sleep overcame me, and I did not wake up except due to the heat of the sun. I returned and heard similar sounds, and what was said to me before was repeated. I was engaged with the sound again, but sleep overcame me, and I did not wake up except due to the heat of the sun. Then I returned to my companion, who asked, ‘What did you do?’ I told him that I did nothing. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: ‘By Allah, after that, I never intended to do anything of the sort again until Allah honored me with Prophethood.’”

This is a rejected narration.

Criticism:

Its chain is weak as it contains Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Qais bin Makhramah, who is unknown.

Reference:

Refer to Ibn Abi Hatim's Al-Jarh wa Al-Ta'dil [Volume 7, Page 303], Taqrib al-Tahdhib [6044: described as ‘acceptable’], and Tahdhib al-Kamal [Volume 25, Page 533].

Al-Hakim stated, “This hadith is authentic,” but it is not as he said, even though Al-Dhahabi agreed with him. Ibn Kathir commented on this hadith in Al-Bidaya wa Al-Nihaya [Volume 2, Page 287], stating: “This hadith is very strange.” [See Page 18]

Another Version:

There is another supporting version: Al-Tabarani narrated in Al-Mu'jam Al-Saghir [Volume 2, Page 138] from Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim Al-Farisi: “My father narrated to us: Sa'd bin Al-Salt narrated to us: Mas'ar bin Kidam narrated from Al-Abbas bin Khadeej from Ziyad bin Abdullah Al-Amiri from Ammar bin Yasir.”

Allama Haythami stated in Majma' Al-Zawa'id [Volume 8, Page 226]: “It was narrated by Al-Tabarani in all three of his books [Al-Mu'jam Al-Kabir, Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat, and Al-Mu'jam Al-Saghir], and there are some narrators in its chain whom I do not know, thus its chain is weak.” Al-Albani stated in Fiqh al-Sirah [Page 95] in his commentary: “Its chain contains a group of unknown narrators.”

Translator’s Note:

In Sahih Muslim, Sayyiduna Anas (RA) narrated an incident from the childhood of the Prophet (PBUH): “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was playing with some children when Gabriel (AS) came to him, laid him down, opened his chest, removed a clot of blood, and said, ‘This is Satan’s portion in you.’ Then he washed his heart with Zamzam water in a golden basin, and then it was joined together and restored to its place. The children ran to his (foster) mother, saying, ‘Muhammad (PBUH) has been killed.’ They all came running to him and found his color changed.” Sayyiduna Anas (RA) said: “I used to see the mark of the stitches on his chest.” [Sahih Muslim, Book of Faith, Chapter: The Night Journey, Volume 1, Page 92, Hadith 163]

This incident indicates that the Prophet (PBUH) was under the special protection of Allah from childhood, and not even for a moment was he inclined towards frivolous matters; he remained infallible, as evidenced by numerous proofs.

Note:

The chain involving Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Qais is Hasan. Ibn Hibban, Al-Hakim, and Al-Dhahabi have deemed him reliable, and a group of scholars narrated from him, thus he is Hasan al-Hadith. Al-Fawzi’s declaration of this narration as weak is incorrect; rather, it is indeed Hasan.

A Story Attributed to Sayyiduna Umar (RA)

Abu Ja’far narrated that Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (RA) asked Sayyiduna Ali (RA) for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Ali (RA) replied, “She is young.” Umar (RA) said, “She has grown up.” Umar (RA) repeatedly discussed this matter, and Ali (RA) said, “We will send her to you.” Umar (RA) then lifted the cloth from her leg, and she said, “Leave the cloth. If you were not the leader of the believers, I would have gouged your eyes out.”

Authentication:

This narration is reported by Sa’id bin Mansur [Sunan Sa'id bin Mansur, Volume 1, Page 147, Hadith 521] and Abdul Razzaq [Musannaf Abdul Razzaq, Volume 6, Page 163, Hadith 10352] with the chain: Sufyan from Amr bin Dinar from Abu Ja’far.

Criticism:

Its chain is weak due to a gap (incomplete chain) because Abu Ja’far Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib did not meet Umar bin Khattab (RA). For references, see Ibn Abi Hatim's Al-Marasel [149].

Abdul Razzaq also narrated in Al-Musannaf [Volume 6, Page 163, Hadith 10353] from Ibn Juraij: “I heard Al-A’mash say.” This chain is also weak as Sulaiman bin Mehran Al-Asadi did not meet Umar bin Khattab (RA).

Translator’s Note:

A dignified and zealous companion like Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (RA) could never have acted in such a manner, and it is unclear from whom Abu Ja’far heard this story. However, it is true that Sayyiduna Umar (RA) proposed to Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Ali (RA), and Ali (RA) accepted and married his daughter to Amir al-Mu'minin Umar (RA) as unanimously reported.
