❖ Question:
Does the use of naswar break wudu?
What is the Islamic ruling regarding its use in relation to mosque etiquette and purification?
❖ Answer by:
Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (ḥafiẓahullāh)
✿ Ruling ①: Wudu and Naswar – Does It Break Wudu?
✔ Verdict: Wudu does NOT break by using naswar
- Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir (ḥafiẓahullāh) states clearly:
“Wudu is not invalidated by naswar.”
- Shaykh Saeed Mujtaba Saeedi (ḥafiẓahullāh) adds:
“Whether it breaks wudu or not is a separate issue—but what is certain is that it is a foul and disliked substance.”
So, from a fiqh perspective, wudu remains valid after using naswar.
✿ Ruling ②: Smell and Mosque Etiquette – Is Naswar Haram or Disliked?
✔ Naswar is a foul-smelling and repugnant substance
Islam strictly discourages coming to the mosque after consuming anything with a bad odor, such as:
◈ Raw onions
◈ Raw garlic
The Prophetic command clearly prohibits entering the mosque in such a state.
Since naswar has a stronger and more offensive odor than both garlic and onion, the prohibition applies even more strongly.
❖ Summary of the Two Rulings:
| Issue | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Does naswar break wudu? | |
| Can one enter the mosque after using naswar? |
❖ Final Guidance:
✔ While naswar does not nullify wudu,
✖ it should not be used before entering the mosque,
✔ to preserve the sanctity of the masjid and maintain etiquette in worship settings.
