Question:
Is it permissible to seek treatment from a spiritual healer if someone falls ill due to the influence of jinn or magic?
Answer:
If a person becomes ill due to the influence of magic or jinn, it is permissible to seek treatment. If treatment is sought from a spiritual healer, one should choose a healer with correct beliefs.
❀ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:"Whoever among you can benefit his brother, let him do so."
[Sahih Muslim: 2199, Darussalam numbering: 5727]
❀ The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:"Seek treatment."
[Sunan Abi Dawood: 3855, its chain is authentic, authenticated by Tirmidhi: 2038, Al-Hakim 4/399, and Al-Dhahabi]
It is prohibited to seek treatment with haram (forbidden) methods, such as polytheistic incantations.
❀ Tariq bin Suwaid Al-Ju'fi (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) about the use of wine in medicine:The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade him and said: "It is not a remedy, but a disease."
[Sahih Muslim: 1984, Darussalam numbering: 5141]
❀ Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:"Indeed, Allah Almighty has not placed your cure in anything that He has forbidden for you."
[Kitab Al-Ashribah by Imam Ahmad: 130, its chain is authentic; and Sahih Bukhari before Hadith 5614]
Incantations are permissible if they do not involve polytheism.
[See Sahih Muslim, Book of Medicine, Chapter: There is nothing wrong with incantations that do not involve shirk (polytheism), Hadith 2200, Darussalam numbering: 5732]
Based on these and other evidences, seeking such treatment is correct and permissible.
