Treatment for Mabrooth (Magical Binding Preventing Marital Intimacy)

This content is extracted from the book "500 Questions and Answers for Women", based on the fatwas of the scholars of Haramain and translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

Question:
In Egypt, there has been a new phenomenon where, on the first night of marriage, a husband cannot consummate the marriage with his wife. It is attributed to magic, commonly referred to as “Ribaat,” “Mabrooth,” or “Rabt,” meaning the person has been magically bound from engaging in marital intimacy. What is the remedy for this?

Answer:

It is not necessary that such cases are always caused by magic; however, in some instances, a person may indeed fall victim to magic, which prevents them from consummating their marriage. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) mentions this in the Quran:

فَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مِنْهُمَا مَا يُفَرِّقُونَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَزَوْجِهِ ۚ وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

(“And they learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah.”)
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 102)

If a person afflicted by such magic uses the prescribed Ruqyah (Quranic healing), Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) will protect them from the evil of magicians and remove their affliction.

Prescribed Remedy:

  1. Recitation of Specific Quranic Verses:
The afflicted person should recite or have the following verses recited over them:
    • Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah: 255)
    • Surah Al-Fatihah
    • Verses related to breaking magic
    • Surah Al-Ikhlas
    • Surah Al-Falaq
    • Surah An-Naas
    • These should be recited repeatedly, and Allah’s help should be sought with sincerity. This remedy has proven effective in numerous cases.
  2. Use of Ruqyah Water:
    • A righteous and trustworthy individual knowledgeable in Quranic healing may recite these verses over water.
    • The afflicted person should drink this water and use it for bathing.
    • Alternatively, the healer may blow directly on the afflicted person after reciting these verses.
  3. Reliance on Allah:
    • The afflicted person should maintain faith in Allah’s power and continuously engage in supplications, seeking protection and healing.
These methods, based on the Quran and Sunnah, are effective means of healing. They are permissible and free from any form of shirk (association of partners with Allah).

Summary:

  • Magical binding can occur but is subject to Allah’s permission.
  • Protection and healing lie in the recitation of the Quran and supplications.
  • Seek assistance from pious and knowledgeable individuals if necessary.
  • Avoid reliance on impermissible or dubious methods.
