Fasting and Qadā’ Rulings for a Traveller in Ramadan

During Ramadan, I was travelling and did not fast. When I reached a city where I intended to stay for some days, I began fasting for the remaining part of that day and the following days. While I am in such a city — which is not my hometown — do I still have the concession to break the fast?

Question
During Ramadan, I was travelling and did not fast. When I reached a city where I intended to stay for some days, I began fasting for the remaining part of that day and the following days. While I am in such a city — which is not my hometown — do I still have the concession to break the fast?
Answer
When a traveller enters a city other than his hometown and has not fasted due to being on a journey:
- If he intends to stay for four days or less:
He is not required to fast during those days. - If he intends to stay for more than four days:
- On the day of arrival, he should complete the day as a fast (even if he began it without fasting) and later make up (qadā’) that day.
- For the rest of the days, fasting becomes obligatory, as his intention to stay more than four days puts him in the ruling of a resident rather than a traveller.
This is the opinion of the majority of scholars.
And the One who grants success is only Allah.
