Top 5 Reasons Youth Go Astray and Islamic Remedies

Causes of Youth Deviation and Their Remedies

Youth: A Stage of Transition

Youth is a stage in which physical, intellectual, and mental transformations occur rapidly. At this phase, intense emotions and impulsive decisions often lead to misguided choices. Hence, young individuals require wise and patient mentors to guide them with understanding.

Below are five major causes of youth deviation and their appropriate remedies:

① Idleness

Cause:
Idleness is one of the leading causes of youth's moral and social downfall. Allah ﷻ has created the human body to be active and dynamic, and constant movement is essential for mental and physical health.
Idleness breeds mental distraction, spiritual unrest, and carnal temptations. As a result, youth divert their energy into destructive activities, leading to social corruption.

Remedy:
Youth must be engaged in positive and purposeful activities.
Based on their aptitude, they should be involved in educational, technical, business-related, or practical work, enabling them to channel their energy into constructive goals.

② Generation Gap Between Elders and Youth

Cause:
A significant reason for moral decay in society is the disconnect between elders and the youth. The indifference and discouragement from elders push youth away, leading them to seek guidance independently, which often results in harm.

Remedy:

✔ Elders should show patience, compassion, and wisdom in guiding the youth.
✔ Youth should respect the advice of elders and benefit from their experience.
✔ A sense of unity and mutual cooperation must be promoted in society so that elders and youth can become a source of mutual guidance and support.

③ Bad Company

Cause:
Keeping company with misguided individuals is a key contributor to youth deviation.
Companionship greatly influences one’s character and behavior.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"A man follows the religion of his friend, so each of you should look at whom he befriends."

And also:

"The example of a bad companion is like that of a blacksmith’s furnace — it may burn your clothes or leave you with an unpleasant smell."

Remedy:

Youth should seek the company of righteous and virtuous individuals — those who are sources of piety, intellect, and knowledge.
Before forming friendships, one should evaluate the character and morals of a person, and avoid those who are immoral and misguided, regardless of how attractive their appearance or personality may seem.

④ Reading Harmful Literature and Misusing the Internet

Cause:
Another major reason for youth deviation is the exposure to literature or digital content that creates doubt in beliefs and values.
Misuse of the internet, especially when one is not grounded in Islamic culture and faith, can easily lead to spiritual and moral deviation.

Remedy:

✔ Encourage youth to study positive and religious literature that strengthens faith and ethics.
✔ Promote the reading of the Qur’an, authentic Hadith, and books written by reliable scholars.
✔ Avoid all misleading content that causes confusion or doubt in religious matters to preserve mental clarity and spiritual purity.

Idleness
Gap between elders and youth
