The Voice of Prophet Ibrāhīm (A.S) and the Call to Ḥajj — A Qurʾān and Sunnah-Based Clarification

❖ The Question:Was Prophet Ibrāhīm (علیہ السلام) commanded by Allah to climb a mountain and proclaim the call to Ḥajj, and was he told that Allah would deliver his voice to all people, and those who respond with “Labbaik” will definitely perform Ḥajj?

❖ The Authentic Report:
According to a narration from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضی اللہ عنہ, he said:

"Indeed, when Ibrāhīm (علیہ السلام) was commanded to proclaim to the people for Ḥajj, the mountains lowered their heads for him and the villages rose up before him, so he called out to the people."

📘 [Al-Ṭabarānī; also reported by al-Mizzī in Tahdhīb al-Kamāl (21/332), and the root isnād is found in Sunan Abī Dāwūd (1885). The narrator Abū ʿĀṣim al-Ghanawī is trustworthy (thiqqah) as per Ibn Maʿīn.]

There are additional supporting narrations (shawāhid) in Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī and others, some of which have been graded ṣaḥīḥ by Imām al-Ḥākim and agreed upon by Imām al-Dhahabī.

📘 [al-Mustadrak 2/388–389]

❖ Common Misconception Refuted:
The popular notion that:
  • Every soul heard the call, and
  • Whosoever said “Labbaik” will surely perform Ḥajj in this world
has no basis in Qurʾān or authentic Sunnah.

This is a fabrication of storytellers and eloquent speakers, not something substantiated by the reliable sources of Islam.

❖ Summary Verdict:
✔ It is established from authentic reports that Prophet Ibrāhīm (علیہ السلام) was commanded to proclaim the Ḥajj.

✔ Allah facilitated this by lowering mountains and raising settlements so the message could reach.

❌ However, the idea that every soul heard this call and that only those who said “Labbaik” would be destined to perform Ḥajj is not authentic.
