The Virtues and Merits of Sayyiduna Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him)

Authored by: Hafiz Sher Muhammad

The statement of Allah, the Exalted:

"لَقَدْ رَضِیَ اللہُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ اِذْ یُبَا یِعُوْنَکَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَۃِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِیْ قُلُوْبِھِمْ فَاَنْزَلَ السَّکِیْنَۃَ عَلَیْھِمْ وَاَثَابَھُمْ فَتْحاً قَرِیْباً"

"Indeed, Allah was pleased with the believers when they gave their pledge to you under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with a near victory."

(Al-Fath: 18)

In this verse, "the believers" refers to the fourteen to fifteen hundred (1400-1500) Companions who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (PBUH) under the tree at the place of Hudaybiyyah. Among these Companions were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Talhah, Sayyiduna Zubair, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Auf, Sayyiduna Saad bin Zaid, and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah. May Allah be pleased with them all.

At the time of the pledge of Ridwan, the disbelievers of Makkah had detained Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), so the Prophet (PBUH) said regarding his right hand, "This is the hand of Uthman," and then struck it on his left hand and said, "This is the pledge on behalf of Uthman"

[Sahih Bukhari: 3299, Hadith: 16, p. 47].

It is evident that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was also included in the pledge of Ridwan. Addressing those who made the pledge, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"You are the best people on earth."

[Sahih Bukhari: 4154, Sahih Muslim: 71/1856, Darussalam numbering: 4811]

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"None of those who made the pledge under the tree will enter Hell."

[Sunan Tirmidhi: 3860, graded as "Hasan Sahih" with an authentic chain, its origin is in Sahih Muslim: 2495]

Sayyiduna Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah al-Taymi, Abu Muhammad al-Makki (may Allah be pleased with him) had many special merits besides the pledge of Ridwan.
The Prophet (PBUH) gave him the glad tidings of Paradise with his blessed tongue.

[Sunan Tirmidhi: 3747, with an authentic chain, Hadith: 19, p. 56]

About thirty-eight (38) Ahadith are narrated from him, two of which are in Sahih Bukhari and three in Sahih Muslim. He is among the earliest converts and had the honor of being part of the sacred group of Muhajirun.

On the day of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"Paradise has become obligatory for Talhah."

[Musnad Abi Ya'la 2/33, Hadith 270 with a sound chain, and Tirmidhi: 1292, 3739 who graded it as "Hasan Gharib," authenticated by Hakim 3/374 and agreed upon by Dhahabi]

The statement of Allah, the Exalted:

"مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ رِجَالٌ صَدَقُوا مَا عَاهَدُوا اللہَ عَلَيْهِ فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ قَضَىٰ نَحْبَهُ وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ يَنْتَظِرُ"

"Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow [to the death], and some of them are [still] waiting."

(Al-Ahzab: 23)

The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) in "those who have fulfilled their vow."

[Sunan Tirmidhi: 3203 with a sound chain, graded as "Hasan Gharib" by Tirmidhi]

On the day of the Battle of Uhud, while defending the Prophet (PBUH), Sayyiduna Talhah's (may Allah be pleased with him) hand became paralyzed. [Sahih Bukhari: 4023]

Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at the age of sixty-three (63) during the Battle of the Camel in 36 Hijri. [Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 3027]
Marwan ibn al-Hakam al-Umawi shot an arrow at his knee, causing his martyrdom.

[Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 3/223, with an authentic chain]

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"I hope that I, Talhah, and Zubair (ibn al-Awwam) will be among those about whom Allah said: 'And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.'"

(Al-Hijr: 47) This has been narrated by Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah with a sound chain. [Al-Musannaf 15/281, 282 Hadith 37810, see also Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 3/225, with a sound chain]

At the time of the Battle of the Camel, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"By Allah, I see no good after this."

[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/278, Hadith 37810, with an authentic chain]

Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"May Allah curse the killers of Uthman in the plain, in the mountain, on land, and at sea."

[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/268, Hadith 37782, with an authentic chain, Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd was free from Tadlis: Al-Fath al-Mubeen fi Tahqiq Tabaqat al-Mudallisin 48/2]

Some of the Rawaafid (extremist Shia) declare the participants of the Battle of the Camel as disbelievers. In refutation, Abu Ja'far al-Baqir Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

"The people of the Camel did not disbelieve."

[Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 15/258, Hadith 37757, with an authentic chain]

A summary of one narration is that the Prophet (PBUH) martyred Sayyiduna Talhah ibn Ubayd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him).

[See Sahih Muslim: 50/2417, and Adwa al-Masabih: 6108]

Lastly, here is a golden saying of Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

"The least defect in a person is that he sits in his house."

[Musnad Musaddad as mentioned in Al-Matalib al-Aliyah: 2814, graded as "authentic and stopped" by Ibn Hajar, and Kitab al-Zuhd by Ibn al-Mubarak, narrated by the trustworthy Na'im bin Hammad: 12, and Al-Zuhd by Waki: 254, and Al-Zuhd by Abu Dawud: 117, 118, and Al-Zuhd by Ibn Abi Asim: 81, and Al-Uzlah by Al-Khattabi: 22, with an authentic chain]

Loving Sayyiduna Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) is a sign of faith. Alhamdulillah.
