The Virtues and Merits of Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ)

Authored by: Hafiz Sher Muhammad

Sayyiduna Abu al-A'war Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl al-Qurashi al-'Adawi (رضی اللہ عنہ) narrates:

"By Allah! I remember the time when 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) had tied me up because of my acceptance of Islam before he himself accepted Islam. If Mount Uhud were to move from its place because of what you did to 'Uthman (رضی اللہ عنہ), it would be justified in doing so."

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3862)

This indicates that Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) was among the early converts to Islam.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) stated with his blessed tongue:

"Sa'id ibn Zayd is in Paradise."(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 3747 with an authentic chain, Hadith: 19 p. 56)

Hafiz al-Dhahabi says:

"He is one of the ten who were given glad tidings of Paradise, among the early converts and participants of Badr. They are the ones with whom Allah is pleased and they are pleased with Him. He participated in all the battles with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and was present at the siege and conquest of Damascus. Abu 'Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah appointed him as the governor of Damascus, and he was the first to hold this position in this Ummah."

(Siyar A'lam al-Nubala, Vol. 1, pp. 124-125)

Note:

Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) was not present in Medina during the Battle of Badr; rather, he was in Syria. Refer to "Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah" (Vol. 2, p. 46, No. 3261).

His share in the spoils of the Battle of Badr was allotted, which is why he is referred to as a participant of Badr. Refer to "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" by Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani (Vol. 1, p. 141 with an authentic chain from Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar, p. 142 with an authentic chain from Ma'mar).
Possibly due to this, Imam Nafi' (the Mawla of Ibn 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ)) narrated:

"He (Sa'id ibn Zayd) was a participant of Badr."(Ma'rifat al-Sahabah, p. 143 with an authentic chain)

Sayyiduna 'Umar's (رضی اللہ عنہ) sister, Fatimah bint al-Khattab (رضی اللہ عنہا), was his honorable wife. A weak narration mentions that Sayyiduna 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) beat his sister and brother-in-law until they were covered in blood for accepting Islam. Then, after performing ablution or ghusl, he read the Quran and embraced Islam.

Sa'id ibn Zayd's (رضی اللہ عنہ) father, Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl, followed monotheism and the religion of Ibrahim and passed away before the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was commissioned as a prophet. Sayyidah Asma bint Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رضی اللہ عنہا) narrates:

"I saw Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl standing with his back against the Ka'bah, saying: 'O Quraysh! By Allah, none among you is on the religion of Ibrahim except me.' (Asma' (رضی اللہ عنہا) says:) He did not bury girls alive. If someone intended to kill his daughter, he would say: 'Do not kill her; I will take care of her expenses.' Then he would take the girl. When she grew up, he would say to her father: 'If you wish, I will return her to you; otherwise, I will continue to take care of her.'"

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 3828)

After his research, Zayd ibn 'Amr raised his hands towards the sky and prayed:

"O Allah! I bear witness that I am on the religion of Ibrahim."(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Regarding Zayd ibn 'Amr, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"He will come on the Day of Judgment as a nation by himself."(Al-Mustadrak by al-Hakim, 3/216, Hadith 4956 with a sound chain. Al-Hakim authenticated it according to the conditions of Muslim, and al-Dhahabi agreed in his summary.)

A woman named Arwa falsely accused Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) in the court of Marwan ibn al-Hakam that he had seized her land. In court, Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) narrated a Hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) and then prayed:

"O Allah! If this woman is lying, then blind her and kill her in her land."The narrator of the Hadith (Urwah) states: Before her death, she became blind and while walking on her land, she fell into a pit and died.(Sahih Muslim: 1610, numbering Dar al-Salam: 4134)

The outcome of enmity towards the friends of Allah is extremely dreadful, yet people do not learn a lesson. Very few narrations from Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) have reached us, with two being recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Once in the grand mosque of Kufa, a wicked person spoke ill of Sayyiduna 'Ali (رضی اللہ عنہ). Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) strongly denounced this and narrated the Hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) mentioning the ten who were given glad tidings of Paradise. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"Abu Bakr is in Paradise, 'Umar is in Paradise, 'Uthman is in Paradise, and 'Ali is in Paradise..."Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) then said: "By Allah! A person who was present with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in any battle, and his face was covered with dust, his (good) deeds are better than the deeds of any one of you, even if you live the lifespan of Nuh (علیہ السلام)."(Refer to Musnad Ahmad, Vol. 1, p. 187, Hadith 1629 with an authentic chain)

This shows that no good deed of any righteous person can equal the dust on the faces of the Companions (رضی اللہ عنہم). Subhan Allah.
Nafi' (Tabi'i) narrates that Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) passed away in 'Aqiq (a place outside Medina) in either 50 or 52 AH. He was then brought to Medina and buried there.

(Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd, Vol. 3, p. 384 with an authentic chain)

He passed away on a Friday. When the news reached Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ), he went to 'Aqiq and missed the Friday prayer due to his busyness.

(Ibn Sa'd, Vol. 3, p. 384 with an authentic chain)

Abdullah ibn 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) applied perfume to him, carried him to the mosque, performed the funeral prayer, and did not perform ablution again.

(Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd, Vol. 3, p. 384 with an authentic chain)

Nafi' narrates that Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd (رضی اللہ عنہ) was a participant of Badr. When Sayyiduna Ibn 'Umar (رضی اللہ عنہ) learned that he (Sayyiduna Sa'id ibn Zayd) was ill on a Friday, he visited him despite the Friday prayer time being near.

(Sahih al-Bukhari: 399)
