The Virtue of Truthfulness and the Destructiveness of Lying

Authored by: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi, may Allah have mercy on him

Chapter: The Virtue of Truthfulness and the Condemnation of Lying
Narration of Abdullah bin Mas’ud:
Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed, truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man keeps speaking the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. And indeed, lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man keeps lying until he is recorded with Allah as a liar."
In another narration:
"Adhere to truthfulness, for indeed truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth and seeks truthfulness until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful person. And beware of lying, for indeed lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire. A man continues to lie and seeks out lying until he is recorded with Allah as a liar."
[Agreed upon: Narrated by Bukhari 6094 and Muslim 2607: 103 in the first wording; and by Muslim 2607: 105 in the second wording]

Narration of Awsat bin Ismail Al-Bajali:
Awsat bin Ismail Al-Bajali narrated that he heard Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) after the Prophet ﷺ passed away, saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in this very place of mine last year, then Abu Bakr wept and said:
"Adhere to truthfulness, for it is with righteousness, and both are in Paradise. And beware of lying, for it is with wickedness, and both are in the Hellfire. Seek well-being from Allah, for no one is given anything better after certainty (of faith) than well-being. Do not envy one another, do not harbor enmity towards one another, do not sever ties, do not turn away from one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers to one another."
[Sahih: Narrated by Ibn Majah 3849 and Ahmad 17.5]
