“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if small.” – Bukhari

The Virtue of the Phrase: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيم

Authored by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Hammad (may Allah preserve him)

✦ Two Beloved, Weighty and Easy Phrases ✦

كَلِمَتَانِ حَبِيبَتَانِ إِلَى الرَّحْمَنِ، خَفِيفَتَانِ عَلَى اللِّسَانِ، ثَقِيلَتَانِ فِي الْمِيزَانِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 7563]

"There are two phrases that are beloved to the Most Merciful, light on the tongue, but heavy on the scales: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيم."

✦ Benefits ✦

① On the Day of Resurrection, the Names of Allah, words of remembrance (dhikr), and recitation of the Qur'an will all have weight on the scales.
② Similarly, deeds like prayer, faith, fear of Allah, and love for Him will be weighed.
③ The two phrases mentioned above will be immensely weighty on the scale because they encompass a declaration of Allah's greatness and His being free from all imperfections.

✦ An Incident of Virtue ✦

Narrated by Ḥaḍrat Jawairiyyah (رضي الله عنها):
One day, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from near her after offering the Fajr prayer, while she was seated on her prayer mat engaged in some remembrance. Later, when the time for Duha (forenoon) had come, he returned and found her still in the same state of remembrance. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Have you remained engaged in remembrance since I left you?"
She replied, "Yes."
The Prophet ﷺ then said:

"After leaving you, I recited four phrases three times. If these were weighed against all that you have recited this morning, they would outweigh them. Those phrases are:"

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ عَدَدَ خَلْقِهِ وَرِضَا نَفْسِهِ وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2726]

"Glory is to Allah and praise is to Him: by the number of His creation, by His pleasure, by the weight of His Throne, and by the extent of His words."
