Chapter: Expiation for Striking One’s Slave
✿ Narrated by Zadhan Abu Umar (رضي الله عنه)
He said: I came to Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما) after he had freed a slave. He picked up a stick or something from the ground and said: “There is no reward in this (freeing the slave) equal to what I have done, except that I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever slaps or beats his slave, the expiation is to free him.’”

✿ Narrated by Abu Mas’ud Al-Ansari (رضي الله عنه)
He said: I was beating a slave of mine when I heard a voice behind me saying: “Know, O Abu Mas’ud, that Allah has more power over you than you have over him.” I turned around and saw that it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: “O Messenger of Allah, he is free for the sake of Allah!” The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you had not done so, the fire (of Hell) would have touched you.”

✿ Narrated by Hilal bin Yasaf (رضي الله عنه)
He said: An elderly man hastily slapped a servant of his, so Suwaid bin Muqarrin said to him: “Did you not have anything else to slap except her face? I have seen myself as the seventh of the sons of Muqarrin, and we had only one female servant. The youngest among us slapped her, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to free her.”

✿ Narrated by Muawiyah bin Suwaid (رضي الله عنه)
He said: I slapped a servant of ours and then ran away. I returned just before the Dhuhr prayer and prayed behind my father. He called the servant and me and said to the servant: “Take retaliation from him,” but he forgave me. Suwaid said: “We, the sons of Muqarrin, had only one female servant during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. One of us slapped her, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Free her.’ They said: ‘They have no other servant.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Let them continue to use her services, and when they no longer need her, they should set her free.’”
