✿ The Fast of 10th Muḥarram (ʿĀshūrā)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I hope from Allah that the fast of ʿĀshūrā will atone for the sins of the preceding year.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1122)
Sayyidunā Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) narrated:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted on the day of ʿĀshūrā and commanded (its desirability). Then he said: “If I remain (alive) until the following year, I will fast on the ninth (of Muḥarram) as well.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 134)
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) further stated:
“Fast on the ninth and tenth (of Muḥarram) and differ from the Jews.”
(al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī 4/287; chain authentic)
This ruling of Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) indicates that one should fast on both the ninth and tenth of Muḥarram.
