The Value of Lineage and the Superiority of Taqwa (Piety)

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami (رحمه الله)
Chapter: On Lineage (Hasab)

«باب في الحسب»

❖ Lineage Has No Value Without Righteousness

Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Indeed, my true friends on the Day of Judgment will be the pious (muttaqoon), even if someone else may be more closely related to me by blood. Lineage will be of no benefit.”
“People will come to me with their deeds, but you will come carrying the world upon your shoulders. Then you will say, ‘O Muhammad!’ And I will respond like this and like this — meaning: No, turning away to both my right and left sides.”
[Ḥasan: al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad 897]

✿ Key Lessons:

Taqwa (piety) is the true standard of honor and nearness to the Prophet (ﷺ) — not blood relations or social status.
✔ On the Day of Judgment, lineage will not benefit anyone without righteous deeds.
✔ The Prophet (ﷺ) clearly distanced himself from those who come burdened with worldly attachments rather than good deeds.
✔ This hadith strongly emphasizes the importance of sincere action, detachment from dunya, and piety over familial pride.
