✦ A Point of Interest for Christians in the Islamic Discourse
Authored by: Hāmid Kamāl al-DīnWhen discussing Islam, Christians should take special interest in the fact that the first Christian to believe in the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was none other than a mighty Christian king. No book of Seerah omits the mention of this event under the chapter of Hijrah to Abyssinia.
Similarly, ʿAdiyy ibn Ḥātim, the son of the renowned Hātim Ṭā’ī and himself a Christian king, came personally to meet the Prophet ﷺ and embraced Islam. These events offer substantial insight for objective observers.
❖ The Selection of Yathrib: A Strategic Sign
One must reflect: if the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lacked strong arguments, why would he choose to migrate to Yathrib (Madinah) — a place where Jewish scholars were already established with their scriptures? These scholars were regarded across Arabia as authorities in prophetic knowledge. The choice of Yathrib served to demonstrate to all Arabs that although they were considered illiterate, the Prophet’s ﷺ evidences were strong enough to stand firm even before Jewish scholars. This resulted in the conversion of several learned Jews, such as ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām, who embraced Islam based on conviction.✿ Jewish Rejection and Christian Objections
Today’s Catholic and Protestant writers, with astonishing carelessness, argue:“If Muhammad ﷺ truly had evidence for his prophethood, why did the Jews — who were familiar with recognizing prophets — not accept him?”
Some even claim:
“Muhammad ﷺ could only convince unlettered Arabs; had he truly possessed divine arguments, the scholarly Jews would have accepted his message.”
God forbid!
◈ The Jews’ Rejection of Jesus (ʿalayhis-salām)
Shall we not ask these critics:Did the Jews not reject Jesus as well? Were they not deeply versed in the history of prophets? Then why did they deny Jesus, who was specifically sent to them?
Despite this, Jesus was rejected by his own nation — the Jews. In contrast, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was embraced by his own people. So where lies the inconsistency?
✔ Does Jewish Rejection Undermine Prophethood?
If Jewish rejection does not shake the Christian belief in the divinity of Christ (ʿalayhis-salām) — despite their claims that the Jews crucified their 'God' — then how can Muslims' belief in the prophethood of Muhammad ﷺ be affected by the same rejection?Did not Jesus condemn the Pharisees — the Jewish scholars of his time? Are these rebukes not recorded in the New Testament? Then why expect a different response from them in the case of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?
❀ Both Prophets Presented Evident Truth
Both Jesus and Muhammad ﷺ presented strong, logical arguments. A handful of sincere Jews accepted both prophets, while the majority denied them. The pattern remains consistent — so why the double standard?✦ Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s Residence in Yathrib: A Divine Plan
Importantly, Jews were not Muhammad’s ﷺ own people, nor was he specifically sent to them. Yet, the Prophet ﷺ chose to reside among them, and even attended their gatherings and addressed them. Was this not part of a divine plan, aiming to validate his prophethood in the eyes of the learned nation of Israel — thereby establishing the truth before all of Arabia?Every moment of the Prophet’s ﷺ life became part of documented, authentic history. His debates with Jewish scholars, and the Qur’anic chapters addressed to the Children of Israel, served to expose the truth to all of humanity.
