Question:
What do you say about intercession (shafāʿah)?

Answer:
There is consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah that intercession is a truth. The Noble Qur’an has affirmed various types of intercessions, and mutawātir ahadith have been narrated on this subject.

The Khawarij, Muʿtazilah, Murji’ah, and Shia deny intercession on the Day of Judgment. The Khawarij say that whoever commits major sins will dwell eternally in Hell, and intercession cannot save him.

It must be remembered that whoever denies intercession is misguided and unjust, and is in severe opposition to the clear texts of the Shariʿah and the consensus of the Ummah.

❀ ʿAllāmah Abu al-Muzaffar al-Samʿani رحمه الله (489H) states:
الأخبار فى الشفاعة كثيرة، وأول من أنكرها عمرو بن عبيد، وهو ضال مبتدع بإجماع أهل السنة.
“There are numerous narrations regarding intercession. The first person who denied it was ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd, and he is misguided and an innovator by the consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah.”
(Tafsir al-Samʿani, 3/270)
