The Truth Behind the Incident of "Tala al-Badr 'Alayna"

Author: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (May Allah preserve him)

Famous Incident:

It is a well-known story among scholars, preachers, and speakers that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) entered Madinah, the Ansar girls welcomed him with joy and happiness by singing the following verses:

طلع البدر علينا من ثنيات الوداع

"The full moon has risen over us from the valley of Wada."

وجب الشكر علينا ما دعا لله داع

"Gratitude is due to us for the one who called us to Allah."

أيها المبعوث فينا جئت بالأمر المطاع

"O the one sent among us, you have come with the command that is to be obeyed."

Hadith Verification:

The chain of narration for this story is weak.

This narration is attributed to Ibn Aisha, who refers to Ubaidullah bin Muhammad Hafs al-Tamimi al-Basri, a scholar whose chain of narration connects to Aisha bint Talha. Due to the multiple intermediaries in the chain, some of whom were not contemporaries, this narration is considered mursal (incomplete or disconnected). This is why the chain is deemed weak. Sheikh al-Albani, in his work Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifah (Hadith No. 598), declared this narration to be weak.

Conclusion:

Therefore, this narration regarding the incident of the Ansar girls singing "Tala al-Badr 'Alayna" does not have a reliable chain and is considered weak.
