Eid al-Fitr is a day of joy, gratitude, and the expression of happiness for the blessings of Allah Almighty, but this joy is not limited to outward clothing and food; rather, the true joy is for the person whose fasts, prayers, recitations, supplications, and other acts of worship during Ramadan are accepted by Allah Almighty. This article will discuss the foundation of true joy on Eid al-Fitr, the need for steadfastness in worship after Ramadan, the limits of permissible entertainment during the days of Eid, as well as the evils that turn the joys of Eid into sins. Additionally, the translation and references of every Quranic verse and Hadith will be fully mentioned.
Eid al-Fitr: Who is the true recipient of joy?
Today is the day of Eid al-Fitr, a day of joy and happiness. But truly, this day is the most joyful for:
◄ The person who has completed the fasts of Ramadan
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Reference: (Muttafaqun Alayh)
Translation: “Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and the intention of reward, his previous sins are forgiven.”
◄ For the person who arranged for the night prayer (Taraweeh) in Ramadan
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:37,2008, Sahih Muslim:759)
Translation: “Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan with faith and the intention of reward, his previous sins are forgiven.”
◄ For the person who worshipped in search of Laylat al-Qadr
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:2014, Sahih Muslim:760)
Translation: “Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and the intention of reward, his previous sins are forgiven.”
Thus, for those who observe fasting in Ramadan and arrange for its prayers, today is truly a day of joy and happiness—may Allah grant acceptance.
The True Eid: Acceptance and Forgiveness
The one who repents in Ramadan, pleases Allah, and obtains forgiveness for sins truly celebrates Eid today. And that person is unfortunate and deprived who has experienced such a great month as Ramadan but could not attain forgiveness.
The saying of Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported (on the day of Eid):
Translation: “Eid is not for the one who wears new clothes and eats good food, but Eid is for the one whose fasts are accepted, whose prayers are accepted, whose sins are forgiven, and whose efforts are valued. And every day on which we do not disobey Allah is Eid for us.”
Similarly, Umar ibn Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say:
Translation: “Eid is not for the one who wears new clothes, but Eid is for the one who remains fearful of the Day of Reckoning (the Day of Judgment).”
Worship in Ramadan: Both Guidance and Gratitude are from Allah
Allah the Almighty said:
Reference: (Al-Baqarah 2:185)
Translation: “Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, and wants for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that which He has guided you; perhaps you will be grateful.”
The righteous predecessors (may Allah have mercy on them) used to pray before Ramadan and also prayed for acceptance after Ramadan, asking Allah to accept our fasts, prayers, and acts of worship.
Fear after Worship: A Sign of Acceptance
Allah Almighty said:
Reference: (Al-Mu'minun 23:57-61)
Translation: “Indeed, those who fear their Lord are the ones who believe in the signs of their Lord, and who do not associate anyone with their Lord, and who, when they give, their hearts tremble with fear that they will be returning to their Lord—these are the ones who hasten to good deeds and are the first to do them.”
When Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) asked about the verse ﴿وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَآ ءَاتَوا۟ وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ﴾, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sunan al-Tirmidhi:3175, Sunan Ibn Majah:4198, authenticated by Al-Albani)
Translation: “O daughter of the Siddiq! No, rather it refers to those who fast, pray, give charity, and fear that their worship may not be accepted.”
It is wrong to abandon worship after Ramadan
Some people worship during Ramadan but abandon much after Ramadan, even becoming lazy in obligatory prayers. This is wrong, because the Lord of Ramadan is the same as the Lord of Shawwal and the other months.
Allah Almighty's command is:
Reference: (Al-Hijr 15:98-99)
Translation: “So glorify your Lord with praise and be among those who prostrate, and worship your Lord until certainty (i.e., death) comes to you.”
The beloved action of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was that which was continuous:
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:43, Sahih Muslim:785)
Translation: “The action that was most beloved to you was that which the doer remains steadfast in.”
The Advice of Steadfastness and the Central Importance of Prayer
Hazrat Thuban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sunan Ibn Majah:277, authenticated by Al-Albani)
Translation: “You should adopt steadfastness (remain firm in the religion), you will not be able to fulfill the entire right, and know that the best of your deeds is prayer. And only a believer maintains the practice of ablution.”
Allah Almighty gives glad tidings to those who adopt steadfastness in the belief of monotheism and righteous deeds:
Reference: (Sunan Ibn Majah:277, authenticated by Al-Albani)
Translation: "Indeed, those who said: Our Lord is Allah, and then remained steadfast, the angels descend upon them and say: Do not fear, nor grieve, and receive the glad tidings of the Paradise which you were promised. We are your allies in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. And there you will have all that your souls desire and for which you wish. This is a hospitality from the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."
For this steadfastness, one should continually pray to Allah:
Reference: (Aal Imran 3:8)
Translation: "O our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower."
And this prayer should also be frequently recited:
Translation: "O Turner of hearts! Keep my heart firm upon Your religion."
This supplication was frequently recited by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. Hazrat Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates that when the Prophet, peace be upon him, was with her, he would recite this supplication often. When I asked the reason, he, peace be upon him, said:
Reference: (Sunan al-Tirmidhi:3522 and authenticated by Al-Albani)
Translation: "O Umm Salamah! There is no person except that his heart is between two fingers of Allah; He directs it as He wills, and He leads it astray as He wills."
Steadfastness in Righteous Deeds: Beginning with Prayer
Steadfastness in righteous deeds means that just as there was adherence to obligatory acts and eagerness in voluntary acts during Ramadan, the same approach should continue after Ramadan.
The first of the obligatory acts is the five daily prayers. There should be no laziness or negligence in them, and as much as possible, one should strive to perform them in congregation at the mosque, because on the Day of Judgment, the first account to be taken will be of prayer.
Hazrat Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Translation: "On the Day of Judgment, the first account that will be taken from a servant will be regarding prayer. If the prayer is correct, then the other deeds will also be correct, and if the prayer is flawed, then the other deeds will also be flawed."
And in another narration:
Reference: (Narrated by Al-Tabarani in Al-Awsat. Authentic chain: 1358)
Translation: "His prayer will be examined; if it is correct, he will be successful, and if it is not correct, he will be a failure and suffer loss."
Continue to maintain the performance of voluntary prayers along with the obligatory prayers, especially:
❀ Sunnah prayers before and after the obligatory ones
❀ Duha prayer
❀ Night voluntary prayer (which was in the form of Taraweeh in Ramadan)
The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) explained the benefits of night prayer by saying:
Reference: (Ahmad and Tirmidhi, Authentic collection of Al-Albani: 4079)
Translation: "You should hold fast to the night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you, and it brings you closer to your Lord, expiates sins, prevents evils, and removes illness from the body."
Arranging for Voluntary Fasting and the Six Days of Shawwal
Just as you observed the obligatory fasts during Ramadan, you should continue to maintain the practice of voluntary fasts after Ramadan, because on the Day of Judgment, any deficiency in obligatory acts of worship will be compensated by voluntary acts of worship.
In particular, there is great virtue in fasting for six days in Shawwal.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:1164)
Translation: “Whoever fasts during Ramadan, then fasts for six days in Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted for the entire year.”
The wisdom behind this is that one good deed is rewarded by Allah tenfold. Thus, the thirty fasts of Ramadan equal ten months, and the six fasts of Shawwal equal sixty days, which is equivalent to two months, thereby completing the entire year.
Similarly:
❀ It is Sunnah to fast on Mondays and Thursdays every week.
❀ It is recommended to fast on the white days (13th, 14th, 15th) of each month.
Hazrat Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, was specifically advised to fast on these days.
Commitment to the Recitation of the Quran
Just as there was a special emphasis on the recitation of the Holy Quran during Ramadan, similarly, after Ramadan, one should continue recitation, reflection, and practice.
Allah Almighty says:
Translation: “And the Messenger (on the Day of Judgment) will say: O my Lord! Indeed, my people have abandoned this Quran.”
Therefore, to avoid the regret of that day, make the Quran the constitution of your life, recite it, understand it, and act upon it.
Avoiding Return to Sins
Some people not only abandon worship after Ramadan but also return to the evils from which they repented during Ramadan. This attitude is extremely dangerous.
Allah Almighty says:
Translation: “So remain steadfast as you have been commanded, and those who have repented with you, and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.”
And He said:
Translation: “And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have taken it, and do not break oaths after their confirmation.”
Similarly, He said:
Translation: “And do not be like that woman who unraveled her spun thread into pieces.”
This means that becoming involved in sins after good deeds is equivalent to wasting one's efforts.
Permissible Entertainment on Eid Days
Expressing joy on Eid day is permissible as long as there is no action contrary to Islamic law.
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that on Eid day, two girls were reciting poetry, and Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:454, Sahih Muslim:892)
Translation: “O Abu Bakr! Every nation has a festival, and this is our festival.”
Similarly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) also watched the games of the Abyssinians and allowed Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) to watch as well
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:454, Sahih Muslim:892)
.This indicates that celebrating joyfully within the limits of Islamic law is permissible.
The Prohibition of Singing and Music
Allah the Almighty says:
Reference: (Luqman 31:6)
Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) swore that “لهو الحدیث” refers to singing.
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari:5590)
Translation: “There will come a time in my Ummah when people will consider adultery, silk, wine, and music to be lawful.”
And he said:
Reference: (Sahih Al-Jami' Al-Albani:3695)
Translation: “Two voices are cursed in this world and the Hereafter: the voice of singing and music during times of joy, and the voice of wailing during times of calamity.”
Some Important Evils Found During Eid Days
The joy of Eid is one thing, but on this occasion, certain sins become common that every Muslim must avoid. Below are some important matters being pointed out:
① Letting the garment hang below the ankles (Isbal) and arrogance
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:106)
Translation: “Allah will not speak to three types of people on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He look at them, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment… one of them is the one who lets his garment hang down.”
And he said:
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari:5787)
Translation: “The garment that hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”
Therefore, trousers, pajamas, pants, or shawls—every garment should be above the ankles. If it is accompanied by arrogance, then the sin becomes even more serious.
Allah the Almighty says:
Reference: (Luqman 31:18)
Translation: “Do not walk on the earth with arrogance; indeed, Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:91)
Translation: “A person will not enter Paradise if there is an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart.”
② Shaving or Cutting the Beard
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:5892, Sahih Muslim:259)
Translation: “Oppose the polytheists, grow your beards, and shorten your mustaches.”
In another narration:
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:260)
Therefore, shaving the beard or cutting it to an unlawful extent is against the Sunnah of the Prophet.
③ Shaking Hands with Non-Mahram Women
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (As-Silsilah as-Sahihah:226)
Translation: “For any of you to be pierced in the head with an iron needle is better than touching a woman who is not lawful for him.”
That is why the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) took a verbal pledge from women, he did not shake hands.
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:1866)
.④ Seclusion with Non-Mahram
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:5232, Sahih Muslim:1341)
Translation: "No man should be alone with a woman, unless she is a mahram."
And he said:
Reference: (Sahih al-Bukhari:5232, Sahih Muslim:2083)
Translation: "The brother-in-law (husband's brother) is death."
⑤ Women Going Out Unveiled
Allah the Almighty says:
Reference: (Al-Ahzab 33:33)
Translation: "Stay in your homes and do not display your adornment like the display of the former times of ignorance."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
A woman is all a veil, so when she goes out (of the house), Satan makes her prominent (in the eyes of people).
Reference: (Ibn Hibban:5599, Al-Tirmidhi:1773)
And he said:
"There will be some women who will appear to be clothed but in reality will be naked... they will not enter Paradise."
Reference: (Sahih Muslim:2128)
Therefore, it is not permissible to abandon hijab and modesty in the joy of Eid.
⑥ Maintaining Family Ties and Caring for the Poor
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“No person among you can be a (complete) believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari:13, Sahih Muslim:45)
And he said:
“Whoever wishes for his sustenance to be expanded and his life to be blessed, he should maintain the ties of kinship.”
Reference: (Sahih Bukhari:5986, Sahih Muslim:2557)
Therefore, one should include relatives and the poor and needy in the joys of Eid.
Sunnahs of Eid
❀ Returning by a different route after the Eid prayer:
“The Prophet ﷺ would take one route to the Eid prayer and return by another route.”
Reference: (Sunan Tirmidhi:541 and authenticated by Al-Albani)
❀ Congratulating one another:
“When the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met on the day of Eid, they would say to each other: May Allah accept (the deeds) from us and you.”
Reference: (Fath al-Bari:446/2)
Conclusion
May Allah Almighty grant us acceptance of the worships of Ramadan, keep us steadfast in our faith, and grant us the ability to celebrate the joys of Eid within the limits of Sharia. Ameen.
