The Trial of Dawah and the Mercy of the Prophet ﷺ

Written by:
Faḍl Akbar Kāshmīrī

It is narrated from Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah (may Allāh be pleased with her) that she asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“Was there any day more severe for you than the day of Uḥud?”
He ﷺ replied:
“I have endured much from your people, but the most difficult day for me was the day of ʿAqabah. That was the occasion when I presented myself to Ibn ʿAbd Yālīl ibn ʿAbd Kilāl and he rejected my message. I departed from there, extremely grieved, and did not regain full consciousness until I reached Qarn al-Thaʿālib. There, I looked up and saw a cloud shading me. In it was Jibrīl (peace be upon him). He called me and said: ‘Allāh has heard what your people have said to you and how they have rejected you. Allāh has sent to you the Angel of the Mountains so you may command him to do as you wish with them.’”
“Then the Angel of the Mountains greeted me and said: ‘O Muḥammad! Command what you wish. If you wish, I will bring the two mountains down upon them.’”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“I rather hope that Allāh will bring forth from their descendants those who will worship Allāh alone, without associating anything with Him.”
