The Tragedy of the Martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in the Light of Authentic Narrations

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day he visited the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and saw tears flowing from his eyes. He asked, "O Prophet of Allah, has someone upset you? Why are tears flowing from your eyes?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "Rather, Jibril (Gabriel) had just left after informing me that Husayn will be martyred by the Euphrates."

[Musnad Ahmad 1/85, Hadith 648. The chain is Hasan (good), Abdullah bin Naji and his father are both reliable, as stated by the majority. Refer to 'Nail al-Maqsud fi Tahqiq Sunan Abi Dawood': 227]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a dream at noon, with disheveled and dusty hair, holding a bottle of blood. He asked, "May my parents be sacrificed for you, what is this?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, "This is the blood of Husayn and his companions, which I have been collecting since the morning."

[Musnad Ahmad 1/242, Hasan chain. Refer to 'Monthly Al-Hadith Hazro': 10, pp. 14-16 and issue: 20, pp. 18-23]

This shows that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was deeply grieved by the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was with Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and he was crying. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Jibril informed me that my Ummah will kill him after me."

[Mushkhat Ibrahim bin Tuhman: 3, Hasan chain. Narrated by Ibn Asakir in 'Tarikh Dimashq' 14/192. Another chain in 'Al-Hakim' 4/398, Hadith 5202, declared authentic on the condition of Bukhari and Muslim by Hakim, agreed upon by Dhahabi]

It is narrated from Shahr bin Haushab (reliable, Hasan Hadith, as authenticated by the majority) that when the news of Husayn ibn Ali's (may Allah be pleased with him) martyrdom came from Iraq, Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "May Allah curse the Iraqis, they killed you. May Allah kill them. They deceived you and disgraced you. May Allah disgrace them."

[Fada'il al-Sahabah, Zawa'id al-Qati'i 2/782, Hadith 1392, Hasan chain. Also, Musnad Ahmad 6/298, Hadith 6550, Hasan chain]

When Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, his blessed head was brought before Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad (Ibn Marjanah, a despised oppressor) who started poking it with a stick. Upon seeing this, Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most similar to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)."

[Refer to Sahih Bukhari: 3748]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that an (Iraqi) asked him about the blood of a mosquito (in the state of Ihram). He replied, "Look at this man, he asks about the blood of a mosquito while they have killed (martyred) the son (grandson) of the Prophet (peace be upon him)."

[Sahih Bukhari: 5994, 3753]

Sa'd ibn Ubaida (a reliable Tabi'i) states that he saw Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) wearing a robe (burud). A person named Amr ibn Khalid al-Tahawi shot an arrow at him which got stuck to his robe.

['Tarikh Dimashq' by Ibn Asakir 14/214, authentic chain]

It is narrated from Shahr bin Haushab that he was with Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him). When he heard the news of Husayn's (may Allah be pleased with him) martyrdom, he informed Umm Salama. She said, "They have done it. May Allah fill their houses or graves with fire," and she fainted from the intensity of her grief.

['Tarikh Dimashq' 14/229, Hasan chain]

Sayyida Umm al-Mu'minin Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) (who passed away in 65 AH) said, "I heard the Jinns mourning over the martyrdom of Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him)."

['Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir' by Tabarani 3/121, Hadith 2862, 3/122, Hadith 2867, 'Fada'il al-Sahabah' by Ahmad 2/776, Hadith 1373, Hasan chain]

Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) in 61 AH.

[Refer to 'Tarikh Dimashq' by Ibn Asakir 14/237, which is the opinion of most historians]

It was a Saturday.

[Refer to 'Tarikh Abi Zar'a al-Dimashqi' 243, authentic chain from Abi Na'im al-Fadl bin Dakin al-Kufi, may Allah have mercy on him]

Some say it was a Monday.

[Refer to 'Tarikh Dimashq' 14/236]

The renowned, reliable Tabi'i Abu Raja' Imran bin Milhan al-Atardi, who witnessed the pre-Islamic era but did not achieve the honor of companionship, passed away at the age of 120 years in 105 AH. Abu Raja' al-Atardi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "Do not speak ill of Ali and the Ahl al-Bayt. One of our neighbors in Balhajim spoke ill of Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), and Allah blinded him."

['Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir' by Tabarani 3/112, Hadith 2830, summarized, authentic chain]

Many weak, rejected, and strange narrations are reported about the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), which I have intentionally not mentioned here. The religion is based on authentic and established narrations, not on weak and rejected ones.

It is a great regret for those who base their beliefs and actions on unverified and rejected historical narrations, and even attempt to introduce these rejected narrations as "Muslim historical facts."

The minor Tabi'i Ibrahim ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i said, "If I were among those who killed Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and then I was forgiven and entered Paradise, I would still feel ashamed to pass by the Prophet (peace be upon him) lest he might look at me."

['Al-Mu'jam al-Kabir' by Tabarani 3/112, Hadith 2829, Hasan chain]

Finally, may Allah's curse be upon those who martyred our beloved leader and Imam Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), or facilitated his martyrdom, or assisted in any way. O Allah, fill our hearts with the love of Sayyiduna Imam al-Mazlum al-Shaheed Husayn ibn Ali, all the Ahl al-Bayt, and all the companions (may Allah be pleased with them all). Ameen.

The Nasibi sect holds enmity towards Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Husayn, and the Ahl al-Bayt (may Allah be pleased with them), while the Shia, in their claim of love, bear enmity towards the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and exaggerate in the love of the Ahl al-Bayt, denying the essentials of religion. Both these groups are on the path of extremism and negligence. The path of Ahl al-Sunnah is one of moderation and justice. Alhamdulillah.

A renowned scholar of Ahl al-Sunnah, Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir ibn Yazid al-Tabari (may Allah have mercy on him), reported the martyrdom of Husayn and other historical events in his 'Tarikh al-Tabari' from Abu Mikhnaf and other liars and abandoned narrators. These events and details are rejected because they are fabricated, but Imam Tabari (may Allah have mercy on him) is absolved since he mentioned the chains of transmission. Only those narrations from books other than Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim should be presented, whose chains are authentic (Sahih) or good (Hasan) according to the principles of Hadith and the science of narrators. Otherwise, silence is better. All the connected and elevated narrations in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are authentic.
