The Test and Comparison Between Prophet Yusuf (A.S.) and Sulaiman bin Yasar

Compiled by: Hafiz Muhammad Anwar Zahid (Hafizahullah)

Incident Narration:

It is narrated that Sulaiman bin Yasar was an extremely handsome man. On one occasion, a woman attempted to seduce him inside a house. However, he firmly refused her advances. The woman continued to plead for his attention, but Sulaiman bin Yasar managed to escape from the house, leaving her behind.

After this ordeal, Sulaiman bin Yasar recounted that he saw Prophet Yusuf (A.S.) in a dream. He asked the person in the dream, “Are you Yusuf (A.S.)?” The reply came, “Yes, I am Yusuf, who was on the verge of succumbing to temptation. But you, Sulaiman, remained protected even from the mere intention.”

Authentication of the Hadith:

  • Chain of Narration: Weak
The chain of narration for this incident is weak. [Al-Hilyah, 2/190-191]
  • Imam Dhahabi's Commentary:
Imam Dhahabi mentions that there is a break (disconnection) in the chain of this narration. [Al-Siyar, 4/447]

Analysis:

This narration attempts to suggest that Sulaiman bin Yasar's resistance was superior to that of Prophet Yusuf (A.S.), as he remained protected even from any inclination. However, this implication is incorrect and should not be drawn from the narration, especially given the weak status of its chain.
