The Sunnah Supplication for Breaking the Fast

Authored by: Sheikh Mubashar Ahmad Rabbani (May Allah preserve him)

Question:

We have learned that some supplications for breaking the fast are fabricated or weak. What is the authentic supplication for breaking the fast?

Answer:

The authentic supplication for breaking the fast is reported by Ibn Umar (رضي الله عنهما), who narrated:

"When the Prophet (ﷺ) broke his fast, he would say: 'Dhahaba al-zama’u wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajru in sha’ Allah' (The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills)."
(Abu Dawood, Book of Fasting: Chapter on What to Say When Breaking the Fast, Hadith 2357; Al-Mustadrak by Al-Hakim, 1/422; Al-Daraqutni, 2/185)
  • Authentication:
    • Imam Al-Hakim and Imam Al-Dhahabi graded this narration as authentic (sahih).
    • Imam Al-Daraqutni classified its chain of narration as good (hasan).

Weak or Fabricated Supplications:

For example, the supplication:
"Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa ‘ala dhikrika aftartu" (O Allah, I fasted for You, and I broke my fast upon Your remembrance)"
is from a mursal narration (a narration missing a direct link to the Prophet ﷺ), which is considered weak according to the principles of hadith classification.

Conclusion:

The most authentic supplication for breaking the fast is:

"ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ"

Translation:
"The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills."

This supplication is supported by sound evidence and is recommended to be recited when breaking the fast.

Allah knows best!
