❖ Is It Forbidden to Lengthen the Prayer?
Lengthening the prayer is not forbidden in itself, but consideration for the congregation is a core prophetic teaching. The Prophet ﷺ would pray long individual (nafl) prayers, but when leading congregational (fard) prayers, he would usually keep them moderate and easy, especially for the elderly, sick, or those with pressing needs.❖ Key Hadith Teaching
The Prophet ﷺ said:“When one of you leads the people in prayer, he should make it short, for among them are the weak, the sick, and the elderly. But if he prays alone, he may lengthen it as he wishes.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)
❖ The Incident of Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه
When Mu‘ādh رضي الله عنه led the ‘Ishā prayer and recited Sūrat al-Baqarah, the Prophet ﷺ reprimanded him and suggested reciting shorter surahs like Sūrat ash-Shams or Sūrat al-Layl to avoid burdening the people. This teaches that empathy and balance are essential qualities of a good Imam.
❖ Ideal Duration of Congregational Salah
✔ Jahri (audible) prayers: ~15 minutes✔ Sirri (silent) prayers: ~10 minutes
This timing aligns with the general stamina of the congregation and the prophetic guidance of moderation.
❖ Regarding Tasbih in Rukū‘ and Sujūd
➊ Minimum: 3 times – this is Sunnah and should not be less.➋ More than 3 times: Permissible, especially in nafl prayers.
❖ Conclusion
➊ It is Sunnah to consider the congregation’s comfort in obligatory prayers.➋ Lengthening the prayer is encouraged only in personal (nafl) prayers.
➌ A balanced duration and mindful practice ensure ease and spiritual benefit for all.
