The Sunnah Method of Tayammum in Islam

Adapted from: Ṣalāh al-Muslim by Al-Fatḥ Ḥusayn

❖ The Ruling on Tayammum

✿ When water is not available and the time for Ṣalāh arrives, one may perform Tayammum using pure earth, even in the case of ritual impurity (Janābah).

❖ The Prophetic Practice

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once struck both his hands upon the ground, blew over them, and then wiped his face and both hands.
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: Book of Tayammum, 338)

❖ Qur'anic Command for Tayammum

"O you who believe! When you rise to perform Ṣalāh, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads and wash your feet up to the ankles. But if you are in a state of Janābah, purify yourselves thoroughly. And if you are ill or on a journey, or if one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have had intimate contact with women and do not find water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it."
(Sūrah al-Mā’idah: 6)

❖ Key Sunnah Elements of Tayammum

Strike both palms on clean soil
Blow gently over the hands

Wipe both hands

Tayammum is a valid substitute for wudu or ghusl in the absence of water, as established by the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
