The Story of the Prophet ﷺ Meeting Prophet Ilyās (A.S) — A Fabricated Account

❖ The Alleged Story:
It is narrated that during a journey with the Prophet ﷺ, the companions stopped at a valley where a voice was heard praying for the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ. Anas ibn Mālik رضی اللہ عنہ peeked to find an extremely tall man, reportedly over 300 hands in height. Upon inquiring, the man introduced himself as Prophet Ilyās (A.S) and sent salutations to the Prophet ﷺ. Anas conveyed the message, and the Prophet ﷺ embraced and dined with him. The story mentions a heavenly meal and concludes with Ilyās ascending to the sky.

❖ Sources That Mention the Story:
Imām al-Bayhaqī in Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwah (vol. 5, p. 421)
Imām al-Ḥākim in al-Mustadrak (vol. 2, p. 674)
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in Hawātif al-Jinān (vol. 1, p. 105)

❖ Reasons for Rejection:
Weak Narrators in the Chain:
  • ʿAbdān ibn Sinān or ʿAbdān ibn Sayyār is unknown (majhūl).
  • Yazīd ibn Yazīd al-Balawī is also unknown (majhūl).
  • One version includes Abū Isḥāq al-Jurashī, possibly a mistake for al-Fazārī, or another unknown individual.

Scholarly Verdicts:
  • Imām al-Bayhaqī explicitly declared the narration weak.
  • Imām al-Dhahabī called it fabricated (khabar mawdūʿ) in Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl (2/685).
  • Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar labeled it false (bāṭil) in Lisān al-Mīzān (8/508).
  • Imām al-Ḥākim considered the chain sound, but Imām al-Dhahabī refuted him in Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak (2/674, Ḥadīth 4231).

❖ Summary Verdict:
This story is not authentic and is classified as fabricated and baseless by multiple authoritative scholars of ḥadīth. The narration relies on unknown transmitters and is not supported by any sahīh (authentic) chains. Therefore, it should not be propagated or believed.
