What do you say about the narrator Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān?
Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān is a ḥasan al-ḥadīth narrator. However, he was also a mudallis. Therefore, apart from al-Bukhārī and Muslim, only those narrations of his will be accepted in which he explicitly states that he heard (samāʿ) the ḥadīth.
✔ Hafiz al-Dhahabī رحمه الله (748 AH):
“I have mentioned Ibn ʿAjlān in al-Mīzān. If his ḥadīth does not reach the level of ṣaḥīḥ, it does not fall below the level of ḥasan. And Allah knows best.”
(سير أعلام النبلاء: 6/322)
Conclusion:
The narrations of Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān are generally graded as ḥasan, but due to his tadlīs, only those reports in which he clearly mentions hearing are acceptable, except for what al-Bukhārī and Muslim recorded.
