Chapter: A Mother’s Right Is Greater Than a Father’s Right
✿ Narration from Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):
A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked:
“O Messenger of Allah, who is most deserving of my good companionship?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Your mother.”
He asked:
“Then who?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Your mother.”
He said:
“Then who?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Your mother.”
He said:
“Then who?”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Then your father.”
In another narration:
“Then your nearest relatives in order of closeness.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhārī 5971, Muslim 2548)
✿ Narration from Bahz ibn Ḥakīm, from his father, from his grandfather (رضي الله عنهم):
He said:
“O Messenger of Allah, whom should I treat with kindness?”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Your mother.”
He asked:
“Then who?”
He ﷺ said:
“Your mother.”
He asked:
“Then who?”
He ﷺ said:
“Your mother.”
He asked:
“Then who?”
He ﷺ said:
“Your father, and then the next closest relative and so on.”
(Ḥasan; Narrated by Abū Dāwūd 5139, al-Tirmidhī 1897, Aḥmad 20028, al-Bukhārī in al-Adab al-Mufrad 3)
✿ Narration from Muʿāwiyah ibn Jāhima al-Sulamī (رضي الله عنه):
Jāhima came to the Prophet ﷺ and said:
“O Messenger of Allah, I want to participate in battle and I have come to seek your advice.”
The Prophet ﷺ asked:
“Is your mother alive?”
He replied:
“Yes.”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Stay with her, for Paradise is at her feet.”
(Ḥasan; Narrated by al-Nasāʾī 3104, Ibn Mājah 2781, Aḥmad 15538, al-Ḥākim 2/104)
✿ Narration from al-Miqdām ibn Maʿdikarib (رضي الله عنه):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah commands you to treat your mothers well three times, Allah commands you to treat your fathers well, and Allah commands you to treat your nearest relatives in order of closeness.”
(Ḥasan; Narrated by Ibn Mājah 3661, Aḥmad 17187, al-Ḥākim 4/151)
Key Message:
These narrations illustrate the immense status of a mother and the great virtue of serving and showing kindness to her. Her right surpasses that of the father, and fulfilling her rights is a means of attaining Allah’s pleasure and entry into Paradise.
And Allah knows best.
