The Status of Sayyidina Ali (RA) Among the Ahl al-Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said on the day of Khaybar:

"Tomorrow, I will give the flag to a man through whose hands Allah will grant victory. He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." [Sahih al-Bukhari: 2942 and Sahih Muslim: 34/2406]

When the morning came, everyone went to the Prophet (PBUH) hoping to receive the flag. The Prophet (PBUH) asked, "Where is Ali ibn Abi Talib?" They replied, "O Messenger of Allah! He is suffering from eye pain." The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Bring him to me." When Sayyidina Ali (RA) came, the Prophet (PBUH) applied his blessed saliva to Ali's eyes, and they were immediately healed as if he had never been ill. The Prophet (PBUH) then gave the flag to Sayyidina Ali (RA) and said, "By Allah, if even one person is guided through you, it is better for you than having red camels (the most valuable form of wealth)."

Allah granted victory to the Muslims at Khaybar through Sayyidina Ali (RA). His esteemed status is such that Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) love him. The renowned and eminent companion, the conqueror of Qadisiyyah, Sayyidina Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA), narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said to Ali (RA):

"You are to me in the position that Harun was to Musa, except that there will be no prophet after me." [Sahih al-Bukhari: 3706 and Sahih Muslim: 30/2404]

This hadith demonstrates the great stature of Sayyidina Ali (RA), but it should be noted that it does not pertain to the caliphate.

Sayyidina Ali (RA) himself said:

"By Him who split the grain (to grow) and created the soul, the Prophet (PBUH) made a covenant with me that only a believer will love me, and only a hypocrite will hate me." [Sahih Muslim: 131/78]

From this, it is evident that believers love Sayyidina Ali (RA), while those who harbor animosity towards him are hypocrites. All Ahl al-Sunnah love and revere Sayyidina Ali (RA). However, this love does not mean exaggerating his status to the extent of considering him a miracle worker or disparaging his esteemed companions and other Sahabah.

Sayyidina Ali (RA) eloquently stated about himself:

"Two types of people will perish regarding me: (1) the one who exaggerates in his love for me, and (2) the one who hates me and engages in disputation." [Fada'il al-Sahabah by Imam Ahmad: 2/571, Hadith 964, its chain is Hasan]

In another statement, Sayyidina Ali (RA) said:

"A group of people will love me blindly until their love for me leads them to Hell, and a group will hate me until their hatred for me leads them to Hell." [Fada'il al-Sahabah 2/565, Hadith 952, its chain is Sahih; Kitab al-Sunnah by Ibn Abi Asim: 983, its chain is Sahih]

Note

Since both of these statements pertain to matters of the unseen, they are considered to be Marfu' (attributed directly to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)), meaning the Prophet (PBUH) would have informed Ali (RA) of these matters. Allah knows best. It is understood that two groups will perish:

  1. Those who excessively love Sayyidina Ali (RA) to the point of considering him as God, a solver of problems, and granter of needs, or who disparage other companions, such as the extreme Rafidah (Shia).
  2. Those who hate Sayyidina Ali (RA), such as the Khawarij and Nawasib.

Clarification

Hakim Faiz Alam Siddiqi (a Nasibi) and others who have insulted Sayyidina Ali (RA) are not associated with the Ahl-e-Hadith. The Ahl-e-Hadith disassociate themselves from both Nawasib and Rafidah. The path of the Ahl-e-Hadith is based on the Quran and Sunnah, and they are the true Ahl al-Sunnah. Alhamdulillah.

Sayyidina Ali (RA) Among the Ahl al-Sunnah

Sayyidina Umar (RA) said:

"The Prophet (PBUH) passed away while he was pleased with Ali, Uthman, Zubair, Talha, Sa'd (ibn Abi Waqqas), and Abdul Rahman (ibn Auf, may Allah be pleased with them all)." [Sahih al-Bukhari: 3700]

Sayyidina Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA) narrated that:

When the verse ﴿نَدْعُ اَبْنَآ ئَنَا وَ اَبْنَا ئَكُمْ﴾ [Aal-e-Imran: 61] (we bring our sons and you bring your sons) was revealed, the Prophet (PBUH) called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain (RA). Then he said, "O Allah! These are my family (i.e., my Ahl al-Bayt)." [Sahih Muslim: 32/2404, Darussalam: 6220]

Virtues of Sayyidina Ali (RA)

Sayyida Aisha (RA) narrated:

The Prophet (PBUH) gathered Fatimah, Hasan, Husain, and Ali (RA) under his cloak and recited the verse:﴿اِنَّمَا يُرِيْدُ اللهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ اَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَ كُمْ تَطْهِيْراً﴾ [Al-Ahzab: 33]"Allah only wishes to remove all impurity from you, O members of the family, and to purify you thoroughly." [Sahih Muslim: 2424]

These authentic Ahadith establish the high status of Sayyidina Ali (RA). It should be noted that the Mothers of the Believers (the Prophet's wives) are also included in the Ahl al-Bayt. Sayyidina Zayd ibn Arqam (RA) stated:

"His (the Prophet's) wives are among his Ahl al-Bayt." [Sahih Muslim: 2408, Darussalam: 6225]

The general context of the Quran also supports this inclusion.
