Among all nations, the people of Lut (عليه السلام) were the most shameless and immoral. They abandoned women and pursued lust with men. Especially if a handsome young traveler entered their region, he would become their target. According to Talmudic records, the people of Sodom were oppressive, deceitful, and corrupt in their daily dealings.
No traveler could pass through their region safely, nor could a poor person secure even a morsel of bread. Often, a foreigner would perish from hunger upon entering their land, and they would strip his clothes and bury his body naked. Their valley, which stretched for miles, had been transformed into a lush garden, wherein they committed vile acts openly and shamelessly.
Prophet Lut (عليه السلام) called them towards Tawheed (monotheism) and commanded them to repent from their heinous acts of immorality. He questioned them:
Why do you approach men with desire instead of women? Indeed, you are a people behaving ignorantly.
Despite his persistent reminders and warnings, the people of Sodom remained unmoved. Instead, they took pride in their filthy deeds and found Lut’s counsel offensive. They boldly threatened:
If you do not desist and continue to rebuke us, we will expel you from our town.
Still, Prophet Lut (عليه السلام) remained steadfast in his mission of preaching and advising them. Eventually, the people themselves challenged him to bring down divine punishment if he was truthful. Despite their continual sin, Allah had given them respite until that day. When they made this final demand, the divine decree was sealed.
Allah dispatched His chosen angels, namely Jibreel and Mikaeel (عليهما السلام), towards the earth. Disguised as handsome young men, they visited Prophet Lut’s home as guests. When Lut (عليه السلام) saw them, he became deeply distressed and anxious, fearing what his people might do upon seeing them.
His wife, Wailah, who had not believed and was in fact a hypocrite, informed the townspeople of the visitors. Hearing this, the residents rushed to Lut’s home. He pleaded:
These are my daughters; they are lawful for you. So fear Allah and do not disgrace me before my guests. Is there not a single right-minded man among you?
They replied:
You know very well we have no interest in your daughters. You are aware of what we desire.
This shameful response revealed how deeply entrenched they were in sin. As they besieged his house and attempted to climb the walls, Prophet Lut closed the doors and hid the guests inside.
When his desperation reached a peak, the angels revealed themselves, saying:
O Lut! We are messengers from your Lord. They will not reach you. So, set out with your family during the night and let no one look back.
As the crowd grew more aggressive, Angel Jibreel (عليه السلام) struck them with a single flap of his wing, causing their eyeballs to pop out, rendering them blind. This was a special punishment for those who had come with malicious intent.
Prophet Lut (عليه السلام), now reassured, departed with his family that very night. However, his wife later turned back toward her people and was destroyed along with them.
At dawn, by Allah’s command, Jibreel (عليه السلام) lifted the entire city upon his wing and ascended to the heavens—so high that even the angels could hear the barking of their dogs and crowing of their roosters. Then, he hurled the city back to the earth, after which a storm of stones rained down upon them.
Each stone bore the name of its target. When struck, the victim's head would shatter completely. This divine punishment that began early in the morning, had completely annihilated the city by sunrise.
The once-beautiful cities of the people of Lut were transformed into a foul-smelling, blackened pit—a sea so polluted that no living creature could survive in it. To this day, no one can derive any benefit from its water. That place is now called the Dead Sea, located between Israel and Jordan.
After a decade of archaeological research, the ruins of this destroyed city were discovered. Investigations revealed that life had completely ceased. Judging by the city’s roads and ruins, archaeologists concluded that life ended abruptly while people were engaged in daily activities. The stone figures of those turned to rock still remain near the Dead Sea—standing as a lesson for mankind.
Today, in many European nations, this vile act is not only permitted in the name of "human freedom", but is promoted with pride. According to one narration, Prophet Sulaiman (عليه السلام) once asked Satan:
What is the most detestable act in Allah’s sight?
Satan replied:
When men fulfill their desires with men and women with women.
And indeed, it is shameful to admit that this very obscenity is now prevalent in our own societies, even legally protected and institutionalized.
May Allah grant us the wisdom and action to reform both our worldly and eternal lives.Ameen.
