The Seven Body Parts Required for Sujood in Salah

❖ Hadith Reference

Narrated by Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I have been commanded to prostrate on seven (parts), and not to fold hair or clothing: the forehead along with the nose, both hands, both knees, and the toes of both feet.”
Source:
Bukhari: 812, Muslim: 490 (This Hadith is agreed upon)

❖ Important Points and Rulings

✔️ The Seven Required Parts for Sujood:

The following seven body parts must touch the ground simultaneously during Sujood:

Forehead
Nose
③④ Both Hands
⑤⑥ Both Knees
⑦⑧ Both Feet (Toes touching the ground)

Note: The forehead and nose together count as one part.

✔️ Complete Contact is Mandatory:
If any of these parts fail to touch the ground during Sujood — whether by negligence or habit, such as raising the feet, or not resting the nose — the Sujood becomes invalid.

✔️ Prohibition of Adjusting Hair or Clothing During Sujood:
The Prophet ﷺ forbade tucking hair or garments during prayer. This emphasizes that calmness, humility, and stillness are essential in Salah. Modern equivalents would include avoiding unnecessary movement, such as repeatedly scratching or adjusting clothes.

Additional Hadith Insight:
From al-Baraa’ رضي الله عنه:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When you prostrate, place your palms and raise your elbows.”
(This further affirms the posture expected in Sujood.)

❖ Conclusion

Sujood, a symbol of ultimate submission, must be performed with precision as per the Sunnah. The inclusion of all seven body parts on the ground is not just recommended — it is a requirement. By adhering strictly to this practice, a believer ensures the validity and spiritual excellence of their Salah.
