The Ruling on Yawning During Salah – A Reflection on Its Source and Proper Conduct

❖ Hadith Reference
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
"Yawning in Salah is from Shaytan. So if any of you feels the urge to yawn, he should suppress it as much as possible."

❀ Important Points and Lessons ❀

➊ Yawning is a Sign of Laziness and Lethargy
Yawning often indicates sluggishness and drowsiness. It is seen as a subtle attack from Shaytan to distract the believer from their prayer. It makes the body inactive and disturbs the flow of concentration during Salah.

➋ Strive to Suppress Yawning
Even though yawning is a natural reaction of the body, one must attempt to suppress it, especially during Salah. If it cannot be avoided, one should cover the mouth—preferably with the hand. This maintains decorum and prevents the release of unpleasant breath that could disturb others.

➌ Yawning with Loud Sounds is Disliked
Exaggerated yawning with noise is considered an act of carelessness and lack of discipline. It not only distracts the individual but also those around them. Excessive opening of the mouth can also pose a medical risk to the jaw.

➍ Especially in Salah, Extra Care is Required
During prayer, the focus should be solely on Allah. Any form of heedlessness, such as yawning or producing sounds during it, detracts from the spiritual sanctity. Suppressing a yawn, or even avoiding it altogether, reflects strong discipline and attentiveness to the prayer.

🌟 Summary 🌟

Yawning in Salah is not just a casual habit; it is an entry point for distraction introduced by Shaytan. Islam encourages maintaining humility, discipline, and awareness during acts of worship. By controlling one’s physical actions, especially in prayer, a believer safeguards their devotion and connection with Allah.

May Allah grant us khushu (devotion) in Salah and protect us from distractions. Ameen.
