The Ruling on Using Mosque Property Elsewhere

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Is it permissible to use items belonging to a mosque—such as a clock, ladder, or pipe—in another mosque or at a house in the neighborhood?

❀ Answer:

✦ Using items that belong to a mosque is only permissible in another mosque or for personal use if explicit permission is obtained from the mosque’s administration.
Items of a mosque are considered waqf (endowed for religious purposes), and their use is restricted to specific religious or mosque-related functions. Utilizing such items for any other purpose—whether in another mosque or private setting—without formal authorization is not permitted.

The principle of waqf in Islamic jurisprudence mandates that once an item is dedicated for religious or communal use (like a mosque), it must not be repurposed or transferred for alternative uses unless there is justifiable need and proper procedural approval.

✔ Summary:

① Items belonging to a mosque, such as clocks, ladders, or pipes, are designated for mosque-related use only.
Permission from the mosque administration is essential before using them elsewhere.
③ Using these items without approval for personal or other purposes is not permissible.
