The Ruling on the Farewell Tawaf and Shopping After Performing Umrah

Fatwa by: Former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله)

Question:

Is the Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada) obligatory for Umrah? And is it permissible to shop in Makkah after performing the Farewell Tawaf?

Answer:

The Farewell Tawaf is not obligatory for Umrah; however, it is considered preferable and recommended. If a person departs without performing this Tawaf, there is no sin upon them. However, during Hajj, the Farewell Tawaf is obligatory according to the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه وسلم) command:

"None of you should leave until his last act is to perform Tawaf of the House."

—[Narrated by Muslim in the Book of Hajj, Chapter 67, Abu Dawood in the Book of Manasik, Chapter 48, and Ibn Majah in the Book of Manasik, Chapter 82]

This command was specifically directed towards the pilgrims.

After performing the Farewell Tawaf, it is permissible to buy all necessary items of daily life, including purchasing goods for trade if the duration is short. However, if the period is extended, then one should perform Tawaf again. If, according to common practice, the time spent is not considered long, performing Tawaf again is not obligatory.
