Question: What is the evidence from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) and the practices of the Companions (RA) regarding saying Ameen aloud after Surah Al-Fatihah?
Answer: Saying Ameen aloud (Ameen bil Jahr) is established from multiple authentic Ahadith. Below are some of the key evidences:
"I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) recite:
‘غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ’
and he said Ameen, prolonging his voice."
[Tirmidhi, Book of Salah, Hadith 248; Abu Dawood 932; Darimi 284/1; Darqutni 333/1; Baihaqi 57/1; Ibn Abi Shaybah 425/2]
Some narrations also state:
"Raf’a biha Sawtahu," meaning "He raised his voice while saying Ameen."
"Abdullah bin Zubair (RA) and those praying behind him said Ameen so loudly that the sound reverberated throughout the mosque."
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Adhan, Hadith 780; Musnad Shafi’i 212/15; Baihaqi 59/2]
"The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘The Jews do not envy you for anything as much as they envy you for Salam and saying Ameen aloud.’"
[Ibn Majah, Book of Iqamah, Hadith 856; Ahmad 134/6, 135; Baihaqi 56/2; Ibn Khuzaymah 574]
Imam Busiri declared this Hadith authentic (sahih).
[Misbah al-Zujajah 297/1]
"I met 200 Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) in Masjid al-Haram. When the Imam recited:
‘وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ,’
all of them said Ameen aloud."
[Baihaqi 59/2; Ibn Hibban 1996, 1997]
