In which Tawaf is Raml required?
Answer:
Raml—walking briskly with short steps—is Sunnah for men only during the first three circuits of the first Tawaf (Tawaf al-Qudum) upon arriving in Makkah for Hajj or Umrah. During the remaining four circuits, one should walk at a normal pace.
Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله) reported a consensus among all scholars and jurists on this practice.
[Al-Fath al-Rabbani 12/23]
Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما) narrates:
“When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came for Hajj or Umrah, during the first Tawaf he would perform Raml in the first three circuits and walk normally in the other four. After that, he would pray two Rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim and then perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.”
