The Ruling on Nosebleed (Naksīr) During Salah and Its Effect on Wudu

Taken from: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

Question:

If a person experiences a nosebleed during Salah, what is the ruling?
Does the blood make the clothes impure?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

Effect on Wudu

✿ A nosebleed during Salah does not break wudu, whether the blood is little or much.
✿ Likewise, anything that exits from parts of the body other than the two private passages (urinary and anal) does not break wudu.

◈ Examples: vomiting, or blood/pus coming from a wound—whether small or large in quantity—are not nullifiers of wudu.

✿ The reason is that there is no authentic evidence from the Prophet ﷺ indicating that such occurrences break wudu.

Principle:

  • The basic rule is that purity (ṭahārah) remains valid until a Shar‘i evidence proves otherwise.
  • What is established by evidence can only be nullified by evidence.
  • There is no proof showing that anything exiting from other than the two passages breaks wudu.

Practical Ruling During Salah

✿ If a nosebleed occurs during Salah, it does not nullify the prayer, regardless of the quantity.
✿ However:

  • If the nosebleed prevents maintaining khushūʿ (focus and humility), it is permissible to break the prayer.
  • If there is a risk of the mosque becoming impure due to the bleeding, then it becomes obligatory to break the prayer to protect the sanctity of the mosque.

Blood on Clothing

✿ Generally, the amount of blood from a nosebleed that falls on clothing is small.
✿ Such a small amount of blood does not make the clothes impure.
