The Ruling on False Testimony in Islam and the Conditions for Its Repentance

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman A‘zami (رحمه الله)

❖ The Ruling on False Testimony

Giving false testimony is among the major sins (kaba'ir) in Islam.

Whoever commits it must:

Repent sincerely
② Make a firm resolve never to return to false testimony
③ If he is truthful in his repentance, and
Restores the rights that were lost or unlawfully acquired due to his false testimony,

then his repentance will be accepted, by the will of Allah.

Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says:

«وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ»

[Ash-Shūrā: 25]
"And He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons sins, and He knows what you do."
