Narrated by ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنهما):
Al-‘Abbās ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib (رضي الله عنه) sought permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to spend the nights of Minā in Makkah because of his duty to provide water to the pilgrims. The Prophet ﷺ granted him permission.

Explanation of Terms:
  • Siqāyatih: His service of providing water to the pilgrims.
Explanation of the Ḥadīth:
This ḥadīth indicates that the permission granted to Sayyidunā al-‘Abbās (رضي الله عنه) was due to a specific justifiable reason. Therefore, if that cause does not exist, then such permission is not valid.

Narrated by ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنهما):
The Prophet ﷺ combined Maghrib and ‘Ishā’ prayers at Jam‘ (i.e., Muzdalifah), pronouncing a separate Iqāmah for each prayer. He ﷺ did not offer any supererogatory (nafl) prayer between them or after either of them.

Explanation of Terms:
  • Jam‘: Refers to Muzdalifah.
  • Lam yusabbiḥ: He ﷺ did not perform nafl prayers. (Third person masculine, past tense, known verb form from fa‘‘ala yufa‘‘ilu)
Explanation of the Ḥadīth:
According to Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله, Imām Ibn al-Mundhir رحمه الله narrated consensus (ijmā‘) on the ruling that no supererogatory prayers are to be performed between or after these two obligatory prayers when combined at Muzdalifah.
