The Ruling on Bequeathing for Quran Recitation on Behalf of the Deceased

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمه الله)
Bequeathing for Quran Recitation on Behalf of a Deceased Person

Acting upon a deceased person’s bequest to hire people to recite the Quran on his behalf is an innovation (بدعت). Therefore, it is neither permissible nor valid because of the Prophet’s ﷺ statement:
“Whoever does an act that is not in accordance with our religion, it is rejected.”
[صحيح البخاري، رقم الحديث 60]
And in another narration:
“Whoever introduces into our religion something that does not belong to it, it is rejected.”
[صحيح البخاري، رقم الحديث 2697 صحيح مسلم 1718/17]
The money that the deceased had bequeathed to hire a reciter should instead be spent on charitable deeds on his behalf. It should be spent on the needy among his descendants as per their needs. Likewise, it can be spent on the poor students of the Quran and children seeking religious knowledge, as they are entitled to this assistance. Similarly, it can be spent on other acts of goodness.
