The Ruling on Abandoning Salah Due to the Pain of Childbirth

Fatwa by: Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen (حفظه الله)

Question:

My wife used to offer Salah until she gave birth to her first child, and then she started neglecting it, believing that the pain of childbirth removes all sins from a woman. What is your opinion on this matter?

Answer:
This is incorrect. A woman, like any other person, should remain steadfast in the face of hardship and seek the reward of Allah (ﷻ). If she endures patiently and hopes for reward, she will be entitled to the reward for the trials and tribulations she faces. The Prophet ﷺ even stated that a mere prick of a thorn can be an expiation for sins.

It is important to understand that any calamities or hardships that a person endures, if faced with patience and the hope of reward from Allah, indeed become a means of reward and atonement for sins. Hardships and tribulations are definitely a means of expiation for sins, and if a person remains patient, they will be further entitled to reward.

There is no doubt that a woman experiences intense pain during childbirth, and this pain indeed expiates her sins. Moreover, if she remains patient and seeks the reward of Allah (ﷻ), she will be entitled to even more rewards and good deeds. And Allah knows best.
